Reviews for "Linear Assault"

Brings back memories...

I remember playing this game a while ago on CMGs, back in the old neighborhood... |D fond memories...

Minus a few points for the fact that there aren't many enemies, but great game nonetheless! You might want to consider a sequal, with like, a points system, so that the enemies give points when they explode, and if you collect say, a hundred points, your attack power goes up, or your health increases or something...

Just a thought.

WarpZone responds:

Hey, nice, you remember my work. :) And fondly, even! :P

Good suggestions, but I'd probably take the scoring/powerup system a step further. Stay tuned. :)

Pretty good, actually! ^_^

Nice! It's basic, but it's fun. Although my hand nearly fell off trying to kill the first boss. XD Very addictoive, and although the music is repetitive, it's not annoying. Congrats on making such a good game, and good luck! =3

WarpZone responds:

Thanks. :) Wait... hand fell off? You know you can hold down the space bar to fire continuously, right? :x

Suprisingly good

From the way you describe it in the comments, I thought it was going to be horrible, but it's pretty fun. If you ever do improve upon it, it'd probably be extremely good.

WarpZone responds:

Thanks. I don't have the source code anymore, but this is seriously what I consider the bare minimum for a flash game. Any future games of mine will be at least this solid in terms of control and collision detection. But also, I intend to do much more in terms of gameplay. More enemy types, a power-up system, secondary objectives, and at least one ending. This was just a fun little arcade game, made back in '05 when that was somewhat acceptable.

Great Game!

Great game... compared to anything I've created (take that however who want). It's a good start and I'm sure you'll put out much better ones further down the road. Oh, part of your rating is for actually accepting that the game lacks in various aspects (refer to final paragraph of author comments) and not boasting or anything. Thanks.

xD

WarpZone responds:

Heh. No problem. :) I'm a pretty straight-shooter, generally. Lord knows I rip apart other peoples' flash games when I review them, so it's only fair that I suck it up when I submit something.

A good gameplay, but kinda plain

I don't know if it's because after reading some bad review down here i expected something much worse, but i really liked this game! I usually can't get myself to play more than a level or two of any other shooter here, but for the first time in years i stopped and played one more than once. I think it's a good game. As others have said, bosses have too much health, the enemies are kinda characterless and the game is very classic, but i seriously thought the gameplay was pretty balanced, at least for the "softcore" players like me. I didn't get killed by random supersonic waves of unpredictable enemies, or while trying to reach some spinning powerup in the middle of them, but just when i failed at predict the enemies' patterns of attack. For example, on the third boss, its big size made up for the large cone of its attacks. I'd really love it if you just added an intro or some text as intermission.
I see people down here pointed out the majority of possible improvements, but, if you make another shooter, i hope you keep at least the good idea of gameplay you had in this one.
Oh and i liked not having to redo the whole level when a boss got me and also that the levels weren't too long. I'm going to wait for your next submission in the Shooters section...

WarpZone responds:

Thanks for the encouragement. If I were making this game today, I would have done some things differently. First and foremost, I would have made the bosses and stages take half as long to complete. Then I'd go in and diversify the minor enemies a bit. Maybe I'd add a story, or a powerup system, but only if I could do so without unbalancing the core gameplay.

At one point, I remember I was working on a spread weapon. Then I realized that using it would make the whole game way too easy, because instead of getting under each enemy in order to take them out, you could park it in the middle of the screen and just hold the button down.

I just realized something else. If you try to kill every enemy, you need to work for it, but it can be done. If you try to hammer the bosses constantly throughout all of their attack patterns, it's challenging but you can usually finish the boss off without losing the last of your health.

But if you play a "safe" game, only dodging enemy shots and hitting the boss only when it's easy to do so, then yeah, the game will take a lot longer to clear, and you'll hardly ever have any motivation to do any fancy flying. I think that might be part of the problem. A few people seemed to enjoy the game, despite its flaws. I think those people are the ones who try to over-achieve. If you play the game to merely survive, you're right, it gets boring.

Anyway, I'll try harder in my next game to give the player plenty of separate rewards to work towards, and to diversify the content. I can't promise much story, because I don't feel it's an essential element in a shmup, but we'll see.
