Reviews for "Governor of Poker"

A well deserved 10

When I saw this game I figured it would be a medeoker (didnt try to spell it right) poker game. But I was way off. This game turned out to be a poker rpg filled with ill graphics and little funny voice overs. I also really enjoyed how you gave tips for the beginners (thats me). Even though I kept losing badly, this game gets a well desrved 5 on the polls and 10 on the review.

wow...

incredible game, but there's alway room to improve. Start off by letting us, the gamer, customize the character, also, if the game is a free doanload, then put the whole thing on this site. Tough game I would like to point out that I got #1 for today's top score!

Good, simple poker simulation

This will be a longer review than normal. Poker is my love and occupation -- I play poker professionally, and split my time equally between working as a grant-writer and participating in cash tournaments in Omaha Hi/Lo, Texas Hold'Em, and Seven Card Stud 8OB.

Initially, the game plays very well and is a lot of fun. There's enough variance between the playing styles of each opponent as to create a sense of true competition at the tables. The mechanics work well, and it's neat to see the reactions of the other players as they "think" out their next move -- twirling a poker chip, tapping their fingers on the table, etc. Moreover, it's great that you included a speed-up bar to bypass all of that once you're familiar with it and just get to the next action on the board. I wish there were something like that in real life, sometimes!

So all of that stuff is great. However, the real problem with this game reveals itself when you're heads up against a single opponent. The characters play very rigidly within a certain constrained set of if/then scenarios. It's possible to find the "sweet spot" with your betting to which another character will be agreeable regardless of the situation, and then to robotically pick them apart.

Real human beings can be like this too, but not to this degree. As an example, take the character "Charlene Jones". She's what's known as a "rock", meaning that she takes no chances. There's a few exceptions to this to this rule for her; If she has decent cards, she's cool with any bet up to $47. To extract optimal money from her in heads-up play, simply open with a bet of $46. Most of the time, she'll call. If not, you'll collect her blind. If she re-raises, fold, because she has something. Another exception is that she will make a modest, small bet -- usually about 4x the big blind -- if she is on a strong drawing hand. She won't bet a gutshot straight, but she will bet a up and down straight draw with flush redraws.

Using this information, you WILL beat Charlene Jones on "hard" 100% of the time. She doesn't deviate from this formula. The real problem is that because she's a complete rock, it's hard to take larger pots from her. The AI literally needs 3 of a kind or better for her to bet into your stack, at which point you'd better have a higher set or trips, or something.

All of the characters are like this in one way or another. Once you have them pegged, the game loses any dynamic variance, and you can beat the routine very easily. I would actually buy this game if the behavior controls were softened a bit and the AI were allowed to make some decisions with a higher degree of randomness, or to attempt streaks, or be anything at all other than the predictable machine it is. It's great that they have different personality types in their betting, but they shouldn't be so rigid that the characters can't act outside of those limited roles when appropriate.

As for the rest of the game, great graphics, decent sound (though some of the more loud-mouth characters can be annoying. Perhaps that's intentional!), and a solid poker engine. I'd recommend this game to anyone looking for some simple experience with beginners poker. Nice job, and I hope some of the AI's shortcomings are addressed with a future version!

Youdagames responds:

We have covered different types of styles!
I am glad that you as an experienced player recognize them! We have put a lot of time in a good AI.
The AI learns it will remmeber your bluffs or your solid play.
We have covered: The fish, the maniac, the calling station, the loose aggressive style, the loose passive style, the thight aggressive style, the thight passive style, and added some more.
Remmeber thatthe game progrsses in diificulty so this means that when in the first ring these styles.
Will be not so skilled as in later stages. If you would try out the Premium Version you will see that it really steps up the ladder in difficulty.

Anyway Thanks for your review
