Finnaly someone who knows what they're talking about! Nintendo didn't get blown away by Sony or Microsoft simply because they have great third-party publishers (Square Enix, Bungie, Tecmo and Team Ninja) but because Nintendo insists on being radically different. The fact that the GC used a smaller disc, whisch didn't allow for DVD play, and the fact it didn't support online play, left it out in the dust. Third-party publishers aren't going to be interested in a system that requires them to make a whole new type of disk to put their game on, espeacially one that makes them eliminate Online Play to do so. The new console, the Wii, once again can not stack up to the XBOX 360 or PS3, because it is much less powerful and it irregular way of using the "controller" makes it hard for third-party publishers to make games. But, again, they use the low price point to jinx consumers into buying it because its cheaper. All and all, the Wii will sell good, but only because its first-party games will save its ass again.

faulty politics

I think you mistake the whole scenario with console games. No single company has ever been in business without their first priority being profit.
Profit is the only resource for survival, anything else is ethical and added.

Nintendo only make games themselves because they have a subdivision that produces them. I can guarantee you that the division that makes the games and the division that produces the system are associated by name and by sharing resources, not by any ideal of gaming that you think.

Individually, people might have values in their work, but as a company, their existance is to make money.

I understand that you think it's unique that Nintendo produces games and creates the system, but you should view the game production division as a separate entity.

The nintendo line is a great line, but creating this link ignores other great lines that produce to the nintendo system.

Many consoles are necessary to create companies that insist on producing across the board rather than cater to one system. These are necessary as well, as people can unite across platforms. (this same demand is seen in the creation of Java)

The industry is demand driven. People demand games that include Nin's staple characters, therefore the games exist. Otherwise the Nintendo would strictly create systems.

Nintendo's problem revolves around the linkage between their platform and their games. They create platforms that cater to their software division and therefore limit across the board games. For example, their new system, WE, isn't standardized, so they will lose out (most probably) on across the board games like Soul Caliber.

This recent diversion from the standard has created a loss of interest in the software producers and therefore they have a greater chance of losing the console war.

Innovation is great as long as it is horizontally compatible. Otherwise it isolates transfer buyers, and keeps it's customers isolated from other console customers
