Reviews for "Halloween Reprisal"

Great job!

Slightly repetitive, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I LOVED the main character for no reason, he just looked awesome, the sound was great, and had a nice, spooky, yet exciting feel too it. Great game, maybe lacking a bit in terms of being a challenge, but in all honesty, that's not the point, as can be seen. It is fun to play, fun to watch, and fun to listen too, and as far as I'm concerned that's all a game needs... to a get a 10 outta 10

Rammer responds:

guh, i've been waiting for reviews for a while. it's frusterating when you get over 1,000 views, but then around 1/100 of those people will review it.

anyway...yeah, the challenging part was taken out because it was screwing around with the rest of the kids' AI. it got really annoying, so me and Blaze decided to take it out.

thanks for the 10 and the compliments (:

{{{ REALLY GOOD }}}

~~~REVIEW~~~
It was a fun game, there was no way to lose tho. Or I'm just too good for it. It had a glitch where you had to be an exact distance away to kill them... But that's because you were under pressure I presume.
~~~POSITIVE POINTS~~~
1. Really fun to play.
2. Different but awesome style of graphics.
3. Violent, which 'tis good.

~~~NEGATIVE POINTS~~~
1. You have to be an exact position to kill them.
2. There was no challenge, you just killed them then moved, nobody tried to kill you.
((( ShortMonkey )))
Rammer responds:
there's no way to lose. and that is not a glitch. if you had read through the previous reviews, you'd know that it was intended like that, but only so the animations sync up nicely.
to the positive points:
1, 2, and 3: thanks, thanks, and thanks :P
negatives:
1. explained above.
2. explained in my responses throughout the reviews.
thanks for your review.
A beautiful game that is slightly repetitive.
I've been looking foward to your guys' game for quite a bit and I'm pleased with the final product (although it was dissapointing to see the candy mechanic removed).
The graphics all looked amazing, with smoothly flowing cutscenes and animation as well as superb effects (yay blood). I already read about the backwards sprite but it was still missed when I played the game.
The style is nice, I had my fun tearing up little children, watching their eyes explode and torsos halve. But the gameplay itself got boring half way through. It's fun to tear the kids up but they realyl should've had the ability to fight back (or at least have them scream :P) I understand about the time constraint but maybe you'll touchit up after all the awards are handed out? The only thing I have to say negative about the gameplay was how weird the hit detection was, it felt like the area for attacks was waaay too narrow. The kids felt a little to difficult to hit which might sound challenging but it was the frustrating kind - you know? Also, the game felt a bit slow paced, the skeleton walks at such a sluggish clip that I felt like I was strainin to move the character (and the kids just hoping around instead of running away from an undead monster seemed kindof silly :P).
Overall though, feature exclusion and pacing problems included, the game was a very enjoyable work and I can see the large amount of effort you both put into this piece. I hope you win something!
Rammer responds:
yeah, sorry about the candy. but you already know why we took it out, so i won't bother to repeat what i said :P
Blaze and i both worked on the cutscenes, which was kind of cool. i storyboarded them and Blaze made them. it was pretty cool to see how close he made it to my storyboards, even though the first cinematic's storyboards weren't finished and the ending one was only described to him.
like i told you, the AI just got frusteratingly complex and the code was confusing to look at. i really had no choice but to take the candy mechanic out \:. as for the hit detection, i know. i probably would have been better off leaving the hitboxes in there, but it felt out of place. i'm not sure if you read it, but all you have to really do is hold down the attack key(s) you want to do and walk up to the kids.
as for the kids just hopping around...it's Halloween, they think he is a fellow trick-or-treater. i WAS gonna implement a gameplay bit that would make them run away from you if they saw you kill someone, but again...i ran out of time.
i hope we win something, too! :D
a good game but i didn't like gameplay
-GOOD-
the graphics and animation was great in this flash! i loved the backgrounds. the music was fitting and a good choice for this game. the story was pretty good, walk through town and kill people is pretty good. i also liked the difrent attacks you could use
-BAD-
well was i said i didn't realy like the gameplay. i think the attacks were hard to use you had to be a sertain distance away while walking and it was overall hard, i think a simple "A" punch "S" kick would be fine. i also didn't realy like how you walked backwards insted of turning around, this made it hard to attack someone who you missed. the other thing i noticed was that the kids you were killing coulden't do anything! i think some other monsters would be needed so that it gets less boring.
-OVERALL-
a good game but needs fixing up
Rammer responds:
to the good:
well...thanks :P
to the bad:
because the attacks are based on specific dying animations, you have to be a certain distance away, or else they get out of sync and it looks retarded. that's why i wrote in that tip in my author's comments: hold down the attack key you want to and walk around.
i asked Blaze several times for a turning-around sprite, but he never got around to doing it. just don't let the kids go past you ;)
like i said in my author's comments, the AI for the kids to ask for candy (and thus present conflict in the game) was taken out because it screwed everything up. it was either submit a broken game that has a little challenge, or submit a rather bugless game with no challenge, but still fun.
like i said to Rudy, adding more kid costumes would mean 7 more deaths per kid. we had 3 weeks or so to make this, and i feel we made the best use of that time.
thanks for the critique.
Wasn't that great :\
The graphics weren't great, they were a bit shabby
The game was original, but poorly planned out.
There wasn't much variation in souds, and the music got annoying fast.
There was lots of violence, but the quality was lacking. The blood sucked.
Intearctivity was good, I mean, it IS a game.
Humor wasn't really there. Killing kids = funny, but not in your game.
Pros:
-good idea
-simple
-halloween them
Cons:
-shoddy graphics, especially the blood. Could use diferent children. More animation would have been nice too.
-crappy, if no, plot/idea/goal
-sounds were too repetative
-music was annoying
Rammer responds:
i wish you would elaborate more on what you didn't like, instead of simply telling us what's wrong, tell us how to fix it. writing a good review with a bunch of things you found wrong in it doesn't make this a critique, but rather a list of things you didn't like about this.
what was bad about the graphics?
how was this poorly planned out?
music, understandable. i probably could have chosen a better song, but we were getting down to the wire here, so we didn't have much of a choice.
again, how did the blood suck? what's wrong with it? you need to be specific here. reviews are here to critique people, or motivate them. your review is obviously trying to be a critique, so why not help me out, here?
as for the humor, maybe killing kids wasn't supposed to be funny in the first place \:. but again, you are being vague. assuming we wanted it to be funny, why not tell us how to make it funny?
cons:
1) we didn't have much time. we were late as it is, animating 7 deaths for multiple children would have taken a lot more than the few weeks we had to work on this. however, you do raise a good point.
2) the plot was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek kind of joke. i have a feeling your sense of humor is really out of whack.
3) again, understandable.
4) same as above.
if you could PM me with more specifics on why the blood sucked, how it was poorly planned out, how the graphics sucked, and how to make killing kids seem funny in this, i'd be very grateful.
thanks for not being a dick about this.
