About the mic for home recordings you will do great with a short range dynamics microphone. XLR plugs in the mic and Jack probably if your sound card is any where near proffesional.
Short range dynamics is really convenient for home recording!

Aye, the Apogee Duet I bought has two XLR inputs for mic so I'm definitely in the market for one. Just using the USB one for now but not a big fan as I had to create an aggregate device, combining the duet and mic's inputs which is where some of the line squeals are coming from, I think.

This track is simply amazing man. Not sure if everyone agrees with me on this but, for some reason its has like an old school Megaman feel to it. Then again, that may just be me lol. Anyways keep it up man.
