Perhaps in some aspects. My coding wasn't as good as theirs, but at least there were more places to explore in mine. Lots of buildings with different things in them, more than one place to get a job at, and not so easy as sticking your money in the bank and sleeping for a few weeks, then being rich.

Indeed you can. There's a "Car's "R" Us" somewhere near the hospital, you can buy two different cars there. There's one other car you can get if you enter a certain character name when starting the game.

it should be you go to jail if you start a bar fight or get too drunk and it says you do something not when you get in debt the guy who killed you with his car should be off the streets for a week (or something) if you get killed by it
