This made me sick to my stomach . . .
I've seen enough of this on TV and on the Internet: yes, we've seen all of the pictures, we've seen the video of the planes crashing into the WTC, and we've heard the "outraged" remarks of George Dubbya, Powell and Co. -- I think it is sickening to see someone collage all of this together in a cheesy music-video-like "tribute." When I say "sickening," I'm talking about "bad art" but also exploitation and a complete refusal to acknowledge a simple fact: that the United States, as a Super Power, has made a lot of enemies; have stepped on (no, blown up) a lot of toes; and the U.S. government has to acknowledge -- yes in the press, on TV, over the Internet --
somewhere -- that they have brought this terrorist attack on themselves.
It should be clarified that I Do have sympathy for those killed in the attack: it was an absolutely horrible thing to happen to ANYONE. What drives me nutty is the awful pride that has manifested itself over the past few days -- "our Great Nation," Bush says over and over, and others continue to view the US as a bastion of democracy and freedom ("democracy" is as ambiguous today as it was in George Orwell's day). The worst thing that has come out of all this is the attitude towards those suspected of the attack -- as if they are uncivilized madmen: War is insane, then, and ANYONE who participates in it is either MAD or is defending their way of life . . . This rant could go on and on, but I'll stop here.
