Excellent Beginning
I liked the battle system you had, as well as the first few enemies you came up with. Separating special attacks from your MP was an interesting turn, continue working with that and I think you'll have a unique aspect to the game to separate it from others.
Couple things I felt were outstanding:
a) Boost is a magnificent Special to have. Giving back some HP and doubling your next turn's attack is an excellent concept. I also believe you have the right idea in making Boost's healing half the rate of Heal.
b)Gustave's battle animation is beautiful. Don't change his style. I think you have that nailed down quite well.
c)The environments were breath-taking; I commend you for such incredible work on that.
d)I throughly enjoyed the music you chose for both the normal and boss battles. Excellent choices on your part.
Couple things you might want to change/work on:
a) Fencing is a unique style of fighting, but I didn't feel the attack animations delt it justice. "Double Touch" could be pulled back a bit more getting ready for the second strike. "Slash" could also be helped out a bit by increasing the radius of the strike to encompass more of the screen. Perhaps having the blade swing in a 180° rather than the 130° you have him doing there.
b) The journal pages, you might want to lengthen them up a bit. Especially at the beginning, they are the prime source of backstory for Gustave. While I felt the explenation you gave was sufficient for an alpha of the game, it will need to be expanded on much later. I did not feel as if I knew him quite enough to become attached to him, although he seems like a really nice guy :).
c) While "Double Touch" is an okay name for a specialty attack, it would be better to name it "Double Pierce" or "Double Strike"; those have a bit more power behind them, and better fit the powerful nature of the attack.
On the whole, I would buy this game upon it's completion, so long as the story is unique and enaging and your scenery continues to be as gorgeous as what I've seen here.
Oh yeah, don't be afraid to put difficulty settings too. I finished the hard game...after realizing Level 4 wasn't going to cut it for the final boss :P
