Reviews for "The Ambridge Mansion-Day1"

Fucking creepy

Seriously, those variouse shapes and mosters constantly lurking around creeped the hell out of me! Love the atmosphere, level designs, and especially those things that pop into view for like a second.

Amazing

This brings me back to the days of Shadowgate and Univited, especially Univited. Man, I have never been actually scared playing a flash game, but this did it. My heart leapt the most during the kills in the dark world. Creepy stuff. The sounds and music fit amazingly well with the rooms and the atmosphere. Can't wait for the rest to come out.

jimgray responds:

Played Shadowgate, but not Uninvited. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, I'll have to try it out now.

Rape physics, and we'd have the Navidson Report...

...Seriously, I rarely write reviews, but I kept getting flashbacks of the House of Leaves. Your ability to create mood and to limit the point of view is wonderful. The prologue was a very effective way to create the sensation that something was lurking, waiting for me.

My only suggestion would be to hone your graphic skills. Gradients should be used sparingly. Other than that, you did a bang-up job. I look forward to losing bowel control because of your future installments.

jimgray responds:

Never heard of House of Leaves prior to you mentioning it. I did check it out though and it sounds like an interesting book.

As for graphics, I'm working on it. This is the first flash animation I've ever done and I came in with no artistic talent whatsoever. Given that, I think it turned out pretty good. Of course, I want them to be way better than they are now for future projects.

OMG!!!

It scared me so bad, I couldn't go on, even if it was so disturbingly intriging.

jimgray responds:

Hey come on now, you can play without the sound if you need to :Þ

wonderfull!

This game is amazing.
Of course, that may just be because I love anything to do with horror and puzzles. It was very scary to say the least, and everyone who thinks it wasn't is just trying to be a hardass. You're puzzles were great (it's very hard to find games with puzzles that you actually have to THINK about... which would be the other reason why other people would not like this, is because they don't know how to solve any of them).
Although the overall idea for the game was not original, it is still one kick ass flash. I'm looking forward to the other "days."

One suggestion: Do not put in a walkthrough. I guess giving a few hints is alright, but definitely not as many or as obvious as you had them. If people are not smart enough to solve the puzzles, then that is their fault, you shouldn't have to help them. The only thing I liked about the walkthrough is that it saved me time (after I caught on to the Painting/Color puzzle, I just used the walkthrough to get the numbers).

jimgray responds:

Thanks for the review. I didn't like the idea of putting in a walkthrough, but then I tested it on people and had people who couldn't even figure out how to light candles when they had already collected the matches. Unfortunately the IQ range of the people playing this is probably between 80-160 so there was no way I was going to make one that would accommodate everyone. I figured reasonably challenging puzzles with a walkthrough would satisfy as many people as possible.
