Reviews for "The Big Fat Tutorial"

Thank you!

Organized well, and sure helped me a lot. Thanks

Helbereth responds:

Well thanks, and I hope it does help in some way. Thanks for the review!

Wow.

You're my hero :)

I've checked back to this tutorial three times since I found it, all for different things and haven't been disappointed yet.

All the other tutorials I've seen cover things that most everybody knows already, or could find out fairly easily on their own, and some just don't explain the things they saying clearly, but this is great. I honestly would NEVER have come up with you rain, ever *sucks at flash* I just love how clear and simple you made this.

*goes back to his hole*

Helbereth responds:

Well it seems it has become a resource (the tutorial I mean). That is what i was aiming for actually. Something people could refer to that (per chance) they might not be annoyed by every time they try to check on something.

I said it before - I tried to avoid the tutorials everyone does. It'sd about time the flash producers out there got some new information, methinks.

Heh the rain is kinda funny. I came up with it over about an hour as I was writing the rain tutorial... The low-tech rain is something they used to do in a lot of old sprite-based video games (very low-tech, easily dropped in where needed and convincing enough).

Ah yes... I live in a hole too... I recently got a window =)

great tut

had a lil prob tho with the action script for the camera cuz it not working for me (don't know bout anyone else) a lil help please

Thanks

Helbereth responds:

You're only the 4000th person with a camera problem, so don't feel bad.

So far there have been 3 possible answers:

1. You're using Flash MX or earlier and lack Actionscript 2.0, which is required for the camera (MX 2004 is a later version, and has AS 2.0).

2. You copied the script wrong. Not many people do this, but it's an easy slip-up.

3. You have Flash MX 2004 or later but your publish settings are farked. To check, go to file>publish settings>flash and check the actionscript dropdown menu. If it's not set to AS 2.0, change it and the camera should function proplerly.

A few tips that came up after I finished the tutorial:

1. Make sure the camera frame and crosshairs are centered in the movie clip. Otherwise (if it's not centered), the frame will be skewed when you play it back.

2. Make sure you can see through the frame (set the alpha settings for the fill color), otherwise you can't see what you're aiming at when you adjust your camera on the stage.

3. If you have any problems feel free to e-mail me at Helberethmail@hotmail.com. I don't check every day, but I usually get around to it every few days.

I'm probably going to go through and make some minor changes to the tut over the weekend. There's a few spelling errors nagging me, and I'm going to add these tips to the camera section.

Anyway, thanks for the review!

Woo!

Wow, that was truly AMAZING! You truly do deserve your place in the 'Learn Flash' list! :) I also loved the 3D camera, I'd seen it before on a tutorial but it never told me how to use it. Making fairies in a completely different style that most people would use - well, I learned alot there! I hope you make more excellent tutorials and animations! Good luck for future Flashes,
blue_mess

Helbereth responds:

Yeah I had to go straight to the top to get it on the list, but I eventually remembered to send the e-mail...

I'd never seen it in a tutorial before. I'd seen hints of its use in some flashes, but I never saw it explained except on the Brackenwood site - and not everyone even knows that place exists.

A different style? I dunno, I just made them how I thought they looked good. I never thought of them as being particularly stylish. Simple, perhaps, but not stylish.

I'll definitly be making more animation (I enjoy doing so), and I plan to build another tut once my calendar reveals a void between projects.

Thanks for the review! Good luck to you too!

awesome

I never found the easter egss but that CAMERA BOX THING FRICKIN RULES!!!!

That alone earns you a 10!

Helbereth responds:

Thanks. The easter eggs were made intentionally easy to find (at least in my opinion).

The first one is on the main menu - an invisible button sitting over one of the vid screens - it opens the sound test.

The second is in the masking section. On every page of the section there's a small button located in the middle right of the screen - it opens the 'fun with masking' page.

After the credit roll there's a screen that pops up listing various sources. Sitting over one of the lines there is a big invisible button that opens the object viewer. (On that same screen, the last line says straight out that there's an easter egg onscreen).

Throughout the tutorial there are occasional tiny white spots located near objects. These are not just dots, they're text. Zoom in and many of them give hints about where to find the easter eggs.
