Reviews for "Shades of Grey Ep. 1"

Its a mixed review, okay?

First before I boast and huzzah you, I have to bitch and belittle you.
Im not to fond of the rotoscoping, but thats just how I was raised. From a previous review, I read that you did make it 3d or whatever, and I didn't really enjoy the fight scenes as well. Not that they were bad, just not as.. realistic as the rest of it was. That beef is minor, this next beef is major.

The only real thing that caught my negative attention was your choice of dialogue. I know you said you were not going to do voice acting, but I found it boring that you didn't even chose to animate the mouths. I mean, I read fast, incredibly fast, so after reading the persons one line of dialogue, I still had to wait a few seconds longer to reread the wording. Thats just one man's oppinion, but I have an idea that you may or may not take into consideration.. Animate the mouths anyway, so it gives a more dynamic effect, making it seem like they are talking. Instead of a line and some text, have a line, some text, and a good amount of facial animation. It really livens the thing up.

Lastly, the boasterama. I loved the whole concept, the 'Drakins' were cool looking. The hero seemed righteous (and gnarly), but kind of like a video game character from a game Ive played, and even the other person in the animation, who speaks of the flood, looked downright cool. I intend on watching the second one and reviewing it, but right now I intend on sleeping. Haha

SirGaryColeman responds:

Thanks for the constructive critique.

I'm at least glad that you had plenty of time to read the dialogue... I was worried about it being too fast. I'm still considering the mouth movement thing... I think I'll try it out and see how it goes. If it ends up being too much work, I'll probably scrap it. If anything, I'll add more things (in the future) to look at while they talk to make up for lack of mouth movement.

meh

decent... but its a bit choppy

Overreaching

This looks decent upon first glance, but the odd juxtaposition between the perfectly on-model body of the main character and the hideously bad animation of his eyes and the water quickly gives away the fact that this is simply rotoscoped from a 3D animation tool.

I have to suspect that the models and animation routines involved were simply imported from an external source and not created by the author, and as such I doubt that an actual hand-drawn animation from him would have been very impressive at all. What is the character model from, Quake 3? Still it's always fun to see someone's ambition overreach their capabilities, especially when that artist decides to attack other animations for being intentionally simplistic.

SirGaryColeman responds:

Somebody is pissed I gave them a bad review.

And yes, I have seen Lost. I love the show. That doesn't mean I like your flash. I hate people who just can't stand when somebody dislikes their work. Learn to take criticism... I didn't find your flash funny (which was it's main selling point), sobeit. Get over it.
