For hours he searched for him. The man walks past a deserted town, the last place where he had not searched. The welcoming ruins set his senses on edge. His fear silenced as he grips his rifle tightly.
In the light of the full moon, he saw a set of footprints. Following it brought him to an old house. Walks in, expecting the worse. Alas, he found his wayward subordinate, dead frozen, yet passed on peacefully.
He turns the body to claim the dog tags when he noticed something gripped tightly within the frozen hands. The clouds clears & the moonlight beams through the cracks of the roof straight to that thing. When he realized what it was, for that one long moment, he froze, eyes fixated.
He opens one pocket, a pocket that he hadn't opened for a long time & takes out a folded photo of his own family. Years of fighting turns his heart to stone but that one moment it melted like butter. The war machine he's trained to be returns to a human he once was. He set camp & spent the night in that cold, broken house.
The next morning he left his subordinate, buried next to his home. As he walks, he checks a few piece of paper he wrote last night. He checks the recipient's address to make sure there's no error, folded it & place it back to his pocket, wondering when he will receive a reply........
