Yep. 11,000 people die domestically from gunshot wounds every year. of course: to properly understand that figure, you must first do a few things:
- subtract all fleeing or aggressive criminals who die under fire from police officers.
- subtract the number of deaths from people defending their homes and / or property from criminals
- subtract all suicides (it's not really terrorisim if you do it yourself)
- subtract all deaths from inter-gang warfare (even if they didn't have guns, they would be killing each other with machetties like they do in south africa)
And finally subtract all "accidental" deaths (i.e. idiot cleaning a loaded gun looks down the barell while squeezing the trigger)
That'll give you the much more realistic homicide rate by firearms.
Besides: 42,815 people were killed in auto accidents just last year: that's 4 times the number who died from gunshot, 20 TIMES september 11th, and approaching half a century in iraq. let's not even think about how long that would take in Afghanistan.
By the way, please don't trivialize the lives lost on september 11th by using them as a comparitory statistic, I lost a relative on the 93rd floor. And inside of me a little part weeps every time someone says something like "you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be killed by a terrorist." Not that you said anything like that, but it hurts, you know?

I dont know if you are pro-guns or not, judging by this, you aren't, at least on assault weapons. I just dont understand why the general population needs the ability to kill others. If you wanna do it as a sport, what's wrong with air rifles? Not nearly as deadly as fucking sniper rifles and pistols are they? But they still make a mess of the lil target. One of the most popular arguments for keeping guns legal is "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." DUH??? Of course it's not the fucking gun deciding for himself, but if you dont ARM the stupid bastard who wants to kill the person, then they will have to find another way out of their predicament, wont they? Or of course they could just stab the person to death. So, other than killing eachother more effectively, why do you need guns?

Ok for the record. The reason the assault weapons ban was allowed to expire was because it was a piece of garbage. Under it I could buy an AR-15 rifle with a 50 round clip and a scope. Who the hell needs a 50 round clip!? But they're legal. The law banned assault weapons but did nothing about weapon accessories. Right now congress is drafting a new weapons ban law that will actually work. The old one was basically a feel good law that tucked you in at night and gave you a kiss and hoped you didn't notice the monster in the closet. Oh yeah and I love it that if a Republican says a vote for Kerry is a vote for Bin Laden he gets ostracized. If a Democrat says it it's an awful truth and he should be hailed for showing us how evil and vile Republicans are.
