Not quite like the real battle system, but you still managed to get it working. You need BG's though, and the hero should attack when you tell him too rather than just the HP going down.

Yeah, the damage system seems to be working alright. Although, I'm not sure if magic does that much damage. But maybe the guy had no "strength" and lots of "magic"? Ehh, either way, I'm sure it'll be great once you get some of the attacking sprites!

Yes, Cecil is a magic user, not an attacker, plus that monster has low magic defense.
