Standoff is a highscore-based web browser game that pits the player against an endless number of mobsters in surprisingly calm and collected gun fights. Outwit the enemy to survive!

Standoff was the result of a week-long game jam that we did way back in September 2013, when we first got together to make games. We delayed releasing it because we were not satisfied with the gameplay. We decided to put it up now as a way to get advice from the gaming community.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

lostabyss777's math is completely off.

I measure ~10 seconds per round at 500 points per round. That's 500 points / 10 seconds, or 50 points / second. 25,000,000 points divided by 50 points / second = 500,000 seconds. 500,000 seconds / (60 * 60 * 24), or a day's worth of seconds, gets you 5.78 days of continuous play.

That's really not bad at all! Something either a hacker could do (by fudging numbers) or an automated program could do fairly easily.

Back to my review...

I understand that you guys wanted to create the feel of an actual standoff, but it's just not fun. There's sadly no benefits to pressing anything other than "down" because the margins for error are just too small (or take too much time to discover). That means you end up with a constant difficulty and almost no learning curve (which gets boring if you succeed because there's no progression, or frustrating if you fail because there's no apparent reason as to why).

I get that it was a side project, but if you guys are going to go Pro, you need more than just polished aesthetics! You need to study the Theory of Fun!

That's some sound advice! Thank you =)

Functional and a quick time waster.

what amused me more than the game was the high score listed at almost 25 million, which at 3 sec per round would equate to ~830+ days of continuous play...

Definitely functional. I have to say you really put a lot of effort into the aesthetics. There's a tangible feel to the world in the design and music. Good on that, but the gameplay needs work. There's no point to shooting directly to the right, at all. The time is about the same to recover, and you leave yourself open to both sides of the bullets. Also, I would have put a heal after the bosses, but that's a personal preference, you seem to be going for an outlasting sort of game. Respect for that. Overall, half your attack options need a little work, otherwise it's just shoot and hide.
Still a decent game though.

Cool game, simple but fun.
the algorythms are a bit too simple though. I had no problems hitting the targets and I would make it to the top rank but it started to get boring as it is just repeating. Maybe add different boss levels?
