Very Hungry Caterpillar

Author Comments

Well, our Flash teacher has a thing for childrens books, so as a required part of the curriculum, we must make "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." Not the most entralling story on Earth, but I did my best to add some variety within the requirements. Expect some real submissions soon. On the other hand, if you happen to actually like children's stories, which is probably why you're here, this is an almost verbatim match for the book, with actual movement. Good if you happen to have kids.

EDIT: Hoorah! A preloader has been worked into this, as well as a few minor changes. Hopefully the quality of the animation can be increased when I can get some more free time.

The Class Agrees

As a member of the aforementioned Flash Class, I must say this was not one of the better ones. Although there was some interesting...frames...and voice...uh...it was cool...
Cronolink agrees with me as well...as he was the one who had the idea of writing this review!

Best of luck on future projects!

DavidBurgess responds:

In other words, it's "Cronolink" being too lazy to just make an account and bash me himself. Very classy, "Cronolink." Well, tell "Cronolink" to put his submission on and see if he does any better. You too for that matter. I'll admit it wasn't the best, but it was hardly the worst. At least I turned mine in on time.

err...

I remember the story from back in they day but...

You coulda done a bit better I think... used some more frames... had a loading screen... which would also get rid of the annoying never ending loop...

I liked it but it could have been done MUCH better...

DavidBurgess responds:

Yeah, this is my first animated work of more than 20 frames. I wasn't hoping for a masterpiece. And if you look just a bit down, you can read my response as to why this lacks a loading screen.

no flash loader... be more prepared next time!

i don't know how the others didn't pick this up... maybe I'm the first to be watching this on dial-up...
before you post any more of your work, check out the following link:

you didn't add a flash loader at the start which means, for people in my situation, we get a choppy, bit-by-bit story. The second time around it worked ok though.

I'm not trying to be harsh but this is a fairly crucial, non-negotiable element of any animation on this site.

DavidBurgess responds:

I did. I added it it in. You know what happened? It screwed the whole thing up. I had to close without saving and re-export my SWF. Apparently, that preloader is written in Actionscript 2.0, and this was made in 3.0. Seeing as how I'm simply posting up something I made long before considering putting it into here, and I have no idea whatsoever how to save to a 2.0 format short of copy/pasting each frame, I had to do without. Sorry.

Wow...

This brings back memories... That book was old, I remember reading it as a kid. Great animation. I'll be looking forward to your future submissions!

DavidBurgess responds:

Wow. I didn't expect anyone to actually like this. Thanks a lot.
