In Edge of Torment, a good warrior confronts another who has fallen victim to an evil sword. This was highly inspired by the movie "Versus" and came about as one of the actors, Tim suggested the novel idea of making a live action movie imitating anime (hair, actions, mannerisms). I'm not a fan of anime but tried the idea out anyway. There were some parts that looked cheesy (the “ninja style” running in place while moving, the blocking the flames with the “magic good sword”, etc), but it turned out alright. I also attempted something suicidal which was combining hand held camera work with blue screening. I had to do an assload of frame-by-frame editing, but made it work.

Some interesting factoids:
-The cityscape photos used for the background behind the 3D buildings were shot by myself from atop the Suncoast hotel & casino parking garage in Las Vegas, NV. Though it's hard to see, there are three instances of the Las Vegas strip in the background.
-The swords used were purchased from BudK.com
-The blue screen shots were shot at the Art Institute of Las Vegas using a Panasonic DVX 100 mini DV camera.

"Nice fight to the death, Doomhammr."

Why is it that every time someone submits a flash video such as this one, it gets flak for not being a cartoon. Even though I would like to see more hand-animated frame-by-frame, that won't stop me from enjoying this short. Now, onto the review: This may not be up to par with some 120,000-3,000,000 dollar indie film, much less a 5 million dollar or higher Hollywood movie in terms of effects and choreography; but for something made by three guys, they get the job done. While the acting could be a bit better, but seeing that you guys aren't professionals such as Dan Castellaneta (from Married with Children and the Simpsons) or Garry Chalk (from Beast Wars and the X-Files); I say that you pass for the effort.

What I liked:
-Good video quality (seeing that video files are huge).
-decent special effects for such a stringent budget.
-Good narration
-Something different

What I didn't like:
-Acting/choreography could be a bit better, but you and your friends are everyday people.

Overall: I think YouTube and Veoh's userbases need to learn a thing or two from you and your friends, Doomhammr. Therefore, here's a nine out of ten. Now if only people here weren't so hostile to flash videos.

"great"

I loved it. All the effects were perfect.

the only thing I'd say needs to be improved is the fight itself. It just needs more life to it. It's a common problem in fight scenes. you just need to put more life into it.
everything else is great, though

Thank you. No offense to Tim and Eddie but neither of them were into it.

~~REVIEW~~
These are always entertaining the fighting and what not but the size just kinda hits my machine abit hard, try and lower the size as much as you can, but other then that it was good.

~~THINGS TO IMPROVE ON~~
Lower the filesize.

~~OVERALL~~
interesting batlle and idea, nice job.

~X~

Author's Response:

I'm sorry, but I can't lower the filesize just for one person. The more I compress the movie, the crappier it will look and I felt this setting was a good median between size and quality (and still fits under the old 5 meg guidelines). The only problem with a large size is that it takes longer for your computer to download it. That's it. I don't see how a 5 meg file "hits your machine hard". It doesn't make your computer run slower. If you're impatient, go find something to do while you wait for it to download like browse another website that doesn't take up much bandwidth.

"not bad"

I can see what you were going for, looks a little cheap but then I’m sure you didn't have a massive budget, could have been a bit faster pace you look like you were being too careful not to hurt each other and no fight to the death is like that ohh yeah the fighting end scene was pretty poor but other than that not bad

Author's Response:

Well, they were real swords we used (unsharpened) but they were heavy and we still had to be careful because as they were clashed over time, little nicks and dents would appear in the sword that WERE sharp. About a year later, another classmate of mine was doing a swordfight movie and actually sliced his hand open well enough to get stitches.
