Anyway, talking of technical incompetence (we are now), I just managed to get my PC to connect to the Wifi by using a pair of pliers as an aerial. I'd show you a picture but it's too darn awesome/lame.

I do. Saza had a good point though, try putting the Blackfang at the top.. pure white, or something.. I'm not sure :p

I don't know if I like my sig.. it doesn't stand out much (that makes me sound really ego-y, wanting my sig to stand out), but I'm not sure if I mind. I want my username changed to "liam" and contacted wade a few days ago, so when that gets done I will change my sig anyway.

I'm going to try and keep this sig for a while, as i tend to identify people by their level/sig rather than looking at their usernames. Kirk for example is drilled into my head because he's had that sig since the dawn of time and luises posts always stand out because of the colourful lollipop.

Game Tech

I really think we are coming to a peak of 2D graphics now (all real time, all 3d). I don't think we can progress a huge amount more without moving into the realms of VR or an entirely new perspective on gaming.

Obviously graphics/physics can still be further improved, they are nowhere near real life levels, but i'm not sure more pixels will add further to the experience. 3D has recently taken off (for some reason) and i think that's going to be the next big endevour for a lot of developers.

Anyway, what do people think is the next step forward for the way we play?

Genuine 3D. If it actually works properly, the future of games is going to be awesome.

I've had to call them for customer service once, they fixed the problem really fast and I don't think I was on hold more than a few minutes, if that. I'm pretty sure their policy on automatic renewals is that you have 5 days or a week to call them and have the charges reversed.

It works, a mate has those Nvidia 3D glasses and they are truly amazing. My favorite game to use them with is GRID, if you crash into a wall and a tyre comes off it looks as if it is coming towards you, really immersive stuff, but not cheap.

I complained on Twitter instead. Ironically, got much faster results there than over email, but after complaining they let me unlock the account without calling support. All is well.

Looks nice, too bad I bought an ATI. I'm not sure if it's worth buying for every day use though, sure it can be a fun thing to try out at your friend's computer or something, but i wouldn't wanna play all my games in 3D all the time. I mainly play games for the competition, and if the graphics are nice then it's a little bonus, but it's not necessary. 3d glasses are nice for casual gaming i guess, but not for "pro" gaming :p

No but more shaders will. I can only pull like 3 post process shaders on Closure's engine before starting to drop below 60 FPS, but damn it'd be nice to pop like 40 shaders in there.

Render-to-texture (applicable for reflections and other useful stuff, especially in 2D) is also a bit expensive if you switch them around a lot. In some cases it can be like trying to render the game 4 times per frame (trying to pull 240FPS constantly)

More power is always good, and I think we're at least a generation away from seeing another paradigm shift

I think theres still a lot of room for games to get better visually. Games like Crysis and Gran Turismo do look amazing, but I still think there is way more room for improvement. The thing I always do is look to the 3D animate films, we havent seen anything near the visuals in Up, or even Spirits Within yet. Hopefully when we reach that "photorealistic" stage where everything looks perfect, developers will look to other ways of improving visuals to make them stand out from all the other pixel-perfect games out there.

Glaiel, Closure is way more visually stimulating to me than yet another first person shooter with 40 shaders stuck on would be.

I don't think the focus should be on graphics, i think physics are a much more immersive device. For example, imagine a game with crysis's graphics, but with real life physics, ie every brick falls indivualy and shatters and breaks to an atomic level. Then i think we will have reached the true peak of 2D immersion.

First of all, I think that Crysis has done a fucking good job on the physics. There's a lot of videos on youtube showing some spectacular examples of their physics engine. Calculating interactions on an atomic level is completely useless - there's no benefit at all in rendering reactions that are smaller than a pixel. Things that are as big or bigger than a pixel can be rendered using approximations. You don't need to calculate collisions on the atomic level to know precisely enough where a brick breaks in half when you throw it on a wall. Doing so would be absurd, and would require unimaginable amounts of processing power. I think we already have reached the peak of 2D physics for games, it's just that this peak has been reached by phyiscists / computer scientists, and not by flash game developpers, which is why it's still kinda rare to see a game with really nice physics engine.

Oh and btw, it would be impossible to compute things on an atomic scale, for the same reason that determinism is being questioned. You would think that knowing the positions and speeds of all particles in a closed system, you could do computer simulations to predict the exact state of the system and any given time, but it's not possible.

and speaking of quantum mechanics, last week I met one of my dad's old friends who works as a physicist at the Weizmann institute of sciences in Israel. he's working on ways to resolve quantum mechanical situations in a way that they can be used to build a quantum computer. According to him, we might be able to build fully functional quantum computer in the next 30 years, which, although it sounds like a lot of time, is really cool considering that quantum computers are really a science fiction thing. you'd be able to do certain calculations in 30 mins that would take the age of the universe on a classical computer. i might talk about it more later, because it was very interesting. i gotta go now

I'm not saying we should simulate the actual sub atomic structure of everything, that would be moronic and unnecessary. What i'm saying is there aren't any games where you can, ie blow a random hole in a building, then blow the chunks you blew off into dust, the blow another hole until the building is structurally unstable and collapses. I don't mean make everything calculated on the smallest scale, but make everything react as it should.

Sounds brilliant, i'm glad its a possibility within my lifetime. The science behind them is amazing, i love seeing intricate scientific findings and experiments being used in everyday life, just thinking about the amount of tech in a a bog standard CPU is amazing, nevermind quantum mechanical devices.

So will that allow larger conversions using Alchemy, as you can subdivide the memory to different proccesses? Or am i completely wrong, as usual :p.

I've just watched a video of some guy on Fox News (Bill O'Reilly? I'm not sure) talking about Amsterdam.. apparently he slandered Amsterdam saying they had a drugs and sex problem so some Dutch people responded via YouTube, showing statistics to prove he was wrong.. so this video was in response to that. The Dutch video showed that around 20% of Dutch people have tried marijuana whereas over 40% of Americans have, and some other statistics.. so this O'Reilly guy was going on about how Amsterdam is full of organised crime and that all the brochures warn of crime, then someone else with him (co-anchor or whatever) was saying "Well.. all the other European city brochures warn of that too" and he went on to say that the statistics are wrong in the Netherlands there aren't as many people as there are in America so the statistics are skewed.. That last sentence made me close the video and hate America. I read something similar a week ago about Canadian healthcare, that America has 10x the people of Canada which is why the American average age is much lower than Canadas.. wtf -.- I am so glad I don't live in America because if I had to put up with that sort of news coverage I would want to burn things down. Not that I watch the news often, but to know it's out there is worrying.

The only knowledge of American news I have comes from Charlie Brooker.

American politics always seems weird. I mean, over here even the most insanely right-wing of mainstream parties aren't going to say anything against the idea of universal healthcare, apart from general complaining about competence. It's scary to see people so far to the right of sanity that they view it as some sort of Communist conspiracy :/
