Heh. I've been doing a tad of Flash just because I don't feel like doing anything else.
And I have to say, I've done better animations in JavaScript =P The event handling is actually quite horrible, it fails to correctly implement having two keys pressed at once. Which sucks for diagonal movement.

Oh well, AS3 still > AS2.

I'm not sure how you're detected keypresses, but AS3 has no problem processing multiple keys being pressed. The event handling is tight. If you're using AS2, then I agree, they key events are weak and it does have trouble with multiple keys being pressed/released.

Also, if you want, show me how you're setting up your key handlers/functions that get called and maybe I could help, because I've been doing a lot of AS3 lately.
