Seeing as how it's been relatively dead in here lately, I decided it would be a nice idea to keep track of people's activity levels in this thread, for no other purpose than a bit of fun, and to help people see who tends to be the most active in here (especially for the newer members who don't know the in's and out's of the EGB's workings - if they need to contact someone about a question, they can check the activity levels to determine who would be best to contact).

Anyway, see how this goes, tell me if you like the idea or not. I just figured as a Records Officer I should find some more things to keep a record of, so here we have it.

This is a record of user's posts in this thread since last Sunday. The order of members is (more or less) the same as from Tuesday's B/P roster. If people like this idea and want it to continue, I'll re-order it into alphabetical order.

Its a nice idea and maybe it will motivate people to be more active in the EGB, I see no reason not to continue with this list.

Indeed, that's why we have a separate roster for B/P. This was just a little idea I thought up to help track who is more active in this thread, rather than on the portal.

Meh... it's not so much about who can post more, it's just to keep track of activity. Obviously I wouldn't ever advocate anybody +1 posting in here (or anywhere on the BBS for that matter) just to get their total up - I hope that goes without saying, but hey, I said it anyway just to be safe.

Still, I also hope that if someone does see a slightly lower activity level than they'd hoped for, then this weekly count could act as something of a motivator for them to be slightly more active in here. We could use a bit more activity, frankly.

Tomorrow - I need to go over the last few pages and check who's new. I believe FBIpolux needs to be added to the roster, and DBlach as a guardsman. I think there might be one more so I'll do a proper check later on.

Nah it's no trouble. Doing that took less time than it usually takes to do the roster, and as it's on a Sunday, I have the time anyway, so it's all good :)

If it helps the Barracks to give itself a kick up the ass and get active again, then it's well worth the time it takes to create it, IMO. Glad you approve of it, anyway!

There hasn't been a post about it, but I assume it's just a simple server upgrade - nothing visible has been changed to my knowledge.

I think the servers were in need of an upgrade, as I've recently been getting the "Error - Server under heavy load" message when navigating around the site. It's kinda annoying, but hopefully now that will be sorted out.

By looking at his profile he has other flashes and I suppose he submits them to other sites for maximum exposure.

These Barracks are fucking slow!

I know that a lot of us are busy with real life though including myself. Work is dominating my life right now and the little free time I have is spent with my wife. I do still enjoy b/p though and try to manage a steady pace.

So here's a question. What's keeping you the Barracks members so busy that you can't find time to post? Both the good and bad reasons.

Also thanks NEVR for continuing to work on the roster and to Stero for previous updates. It's one of my favorite features of the barracks.

This turned into a suggestion thread and then evolved into a blam thread. This topic has since died out as I expected it would. People will return to voting the way they used to. Nothing will change. Wade will get mad. The cycle repeats.
I made a suggestion on page 16 that I feel obviously with bias, was the best. Re-printed below for your viewing pleasure.

Choose a select group of moderators that you feel can judge flash objectively. Give them the power to judge flash they deem unworthy of protection status.

1. One moderator judges the flash to be crap which puts it into a judgement folder for review by the other moderators.

2. The other moderators review the these flash at a time of their choosing with flash being judged according to the majority vote.

3. The flash is either deleted from or restored to the portal. You could add a ban for flash determined to be spam.

It's a little extreme but it's an idea that could work. I think it's a fair idea, especially if you check on your moderators from time to time and keep them fair.

Also raising the bar a little on the 1.6 wouldn't hurt either.

Now the reason I think this is the best suggestion is that it relies on trusted, and supervised people. Supervised by the admins that is. This would eventually turn the tide of voters to vote more fair instead of the save happy voting crowd of today. It would also discourage spammers from spamming. Not stopping but significantly reducing it.

Blow this theory out of the water. Shoot holes through it. Make me wrong. But, suggest something better.

Maybe if we find a good solution we all agree upon we can submit this as a group to Wade.

Well I have been away due to a car wreck, which is the main reason, and also work has been demanding of my time. I try to post when I can but sometimes there is just nothing to talk about.

Yes it has, but I have been getting more blams recently so maybe not all is lost.

Sounds like a good idea, but not that many mods are active enough in the portal anymore to be effective. We could get a few but add some new mods that are active in the portal, maybe even some EGB members.

It seems to be fair and would help with the onslaught of spam in the portal especially on designated spam days.

I wouldn't mind for the bar to be risen to 2 to pass, since the lowest protection point is a 2 anyway. Makes sense.

Maybe even a way for the mods to view how the person votes and ban them but I could see that as restricting the way a person can vote on a flash when it is their right to vote how they want too. So all in all I guess the best way to deal with it is to cut the source which is the spam movie itself and just try to get people to vote fairly. I would prefer if Wade deleted the spammers but the motto is "Everything, By Everyone."

I'm now 4 weeks away from graduating from university, which means a small mountain of coursework, planning for next year, planning for the Summer, the last matches of the water polo season, and somewhere amongst all that spending time with my girlfriend. I don't think you can simply give moderators the power of judgement like that, trustworthy or not. The whole point is the community as a whole decides (though at the moment it is being abused). What exactly constitutes a bad flash? Would everyone agree? In my opinion the best policy is to have a 'spam' whistle purely for spam submissions i.e. flash that is continually submitted to the portal, such as all that Adolf Hitler rubbish. These would be taken off the portal for moderation, and deleted if shown to be obvious spam. You can't just do it with bad submissions though, as many are genuine attempts at flash, and those authors deserve reviews and help to improve (as it is I think you should be able to submit reviews to blammed submissions, as often i write long informative reviews to help and by the time I am done it is gone and I can't submit it).

It may also be possibly to allow Moderators access to who votes what on each submission, enabling them to easily identify people mass voting or abusing the system and thus issuing bans. A few days of not being able to vote (and therefore a loss of EXP) would certainly stop a lot of people.

Also raising the bar a little on the 1.6 wouldn't hurt either.

I've wanted that for a long time, it would certainly help a great deal. Also it shouldn't be possible to add co-authors after it has passed, that is simply abusing the new system of higher boundaries for submissions with multiple authors.

The portal mods could make a huge difference, it is all about making it a fair system, and it is bound to need tweaking here and there.

These are all very good suggestions!

If we keep this up for a page or two we could have something that works and is worth listening to. Especially the spam whistle idea. That's something that could really work especially with the EGB and Rage's Abuse helping out.
The only downfall of the whistle is that it's a system which would take time to develop. My idea could be implemented now and at no cost. It's also effective.

Keep the ideas coming! I will be gone for the next week but when I get back I'll take some time and join back in the discussion.

It was alive and well until Star Day rolled around... But on a day devoted to a former spam crew, it's pretty hard to go post a spam movie and ask people to Blam it.

Whoa man, not that I don't see something that can be worked on in your argument (maybe if definite criteria for "spam" can be set up as Whistle criteria, and the mods only looked at flagged movies), but there's some problems with the idea. The system we have in place now may be on the fritz, but it still allows the votes of the users to determine what stays and what goes. Even though plenty of spam shit passes, does that constitute a failure of the very idea? No more than the election of George Bush constituted a failure for the idea of democracy.

The thing is, people have different opinions. Even Wade is not immune to the human error of wanting all things to go with his own desire; the mods he would choose would likely be of like mind to him about what constitutes spam. So if Wade (and by extension, the mods he would choose) thought KK movies were spam, then even a good movie that someone might be willing to pass without statwhoring might be flagged and deleted as "spam".

But what, then, would the purpose of UJ voting be? If no vote had any real ability to save a movie if a few people thought it was bad, would that do anything to reduce statwhoring? Not that I can see. In fact it would be even more that the only reason for voting would be points.

Well, add "spam" as a whistle option, with a near-universally accepted definition, and then add in the Portal mods to look at flagged movies to make sure nothing had been unfairly flagged, and to unflag wrongful Whistle-blowing with penalty for the failed blowers.

I do agree with your idea of raising the B/P threshold though. Preferably to 2.50, so that a majority of the voting power would need to vote to pass the movie for it to avoid the obituaries.

Well then, congratulations on that!

I believe that the spam whistle is an excellent idea if indeed the definition of what constitutes as spam is added to the FAQ ( unlike the way it is now). Also, for some submissions to be considered as spam like in the instance of something being resubmitted with little or no changes e.g. the hitler, fulp, and stalin things, those require at least a few to be submitted. Think about it, if just the first one was passed having never been submitted (think of a happier time rid of spam) it couldn't classify as resubmission spam anyway. I hope this makes some sense again I'll lay out my bottom line: if a clear and easy to understand definition of spam was written and added to the FAQ, there should definitely be a spam whistle. There would however be different kinds of spam such as the current whistle system like the different kinds of abusive submissions such as stolen, malicious, and unsuitable.

Only had 1 character left in the last post, so here's my full note and link to the previous update.

NEVR's note:

- Joshiwa will now be working alongside me with the rosters. I allowed several days following his offer for others to express an interest, but none did. If you wanted to be involved in the roster, you'll have to wait until one of us retires from updating it.

- Promotions are back, all may rejoice.

- DBlach, despite meeting the point requisites, remains a Guardsman until restoring his whistle, at which time he may request full membership. This has been decreed by Slash.

- Last roster was 2 weeks ago, so average is calculated as 'gain / 14'.
