We aren't planning to retroactively classify all the old E-M threads but when old threads with Adult content come up, they will have their rating changed to A.

Ah, there goes 2 questions:

I'm also going to ask if the rating icon will show up on the forum thread themselves, ie. a column of E's, Ts, Ms, etc. so that a rated thread is easier to notice.

Either that or colour the tank icons green, blue, purple etc.

Current thinking is replace the tank icon with the rating icon, make it grey if there are no new posts (but rating letter is still visible, could also de-saturate without going full grey), make it bright if it's a hot thread - basically what the tank icon does but with the rating icon.

because how are the mods going to deal with a thread where the poster absentmindedly left an E rating on, but the topic evolves into M-rated territory? specially with how often users have to report art that was left E-rated when it should be M-rated. it's not like the initial poster can control which rating nuances a thread goes to when there are several people discussing the topic...

Newgrounds is better with its own personality and content rating than doing the same as other websites, yt only has a "like" button like other websites, pathetic

A good point. Perhaps every post in the forum should be given the ability to be marked "safe" and "not safe"? That way anybody not wanting to see those types of posts can just turn off "not safe" and it just automatically being off for kids?

That could be too complicated though. Not sure.

(Misread this first time around). I don't think A-rated posts belong outside of threads that are not A-rated either. And even if this were implemented it'd result in weird gaps in the discussion as people would quote A-rated posts in part or whole that not everyone in the thread would be able to see. I think the current system's fine.

Literally just this button.

Well, I moreso refer to every single post inside of a single forum having the capability of marking it as "safe" or "not safe", but it looks like Tom and the crew may have it figured out.

Yeah, I misread your post. I think you're basing this off of a hypothetical that isn't all that common though. If a thread is meant for adults or has adult content in it, the whole thread should be A-rated, not parts of it. And if someone rated a thread incorrectly, the mods can adjust the rating - they do this with other types of content on the site too.

Let's not go down that road. NG's allowance for adult content should always revolve around people's original art and not open the floodgates to the worst of everything else out there.

Important note: This doesn’t mean you can post nudes, or porn you’ve found on the Internet in an adult thread. Adult threads are intended for artists who are sharing their art, in particular in the Art Forum, where there are a good number of NSFW threads that have now been updated.

We still need to make updates to show ratings in the thread listings. We also plan to let thread creators edit the rating on their own threads at any time after the thread has been created.

The forum listings and forum search will now apply your ratings filters, so if you think threads are missing, check your filters. The filter toggle wasn't there when this launched but it has now been added.

I hope everyone is enjoying their spring! The feed overhaul is still in progress and won’t result in any visible changes but will improve overall performance and server storage for feeds. Similarly there have been text editor updates in progress that will mainly be back-end improvements. This year has been all about "not fun but necessary" projects so far.

If you filter out the E rated threads, then the page counter doesn't update:

iu_1190862_2555669.png

If there are no A rated threads then this becomes even more obvious with there being a blank table and only the page numbers remaining. I'm guessing the filtering is done client-side rather than server-side for the time being? Since it seems like it's fetching all the entries and just hiding the ones that don't match the filters.

Yeah at the moment it's filtering the incoming results for the page. Filtering + pagination creates headaches but might get worked out, it has been tempting to replace pagination with infinite scroll combined with a custom date range filter at the top. I actually think scrolling and having more threads pop in might be pretty decent... We'd have to figure out what to do with the "In this forum" stat stuff that appears at the bottom of the page, though.

To answer my own question there, I guess in place of the row at the top with pagination, we'd have the date range search on the left and some blurb about "Current Users:" on the right, maybe if you click it you get a lightbox with the full list.

Hey, Tom, I haven't noticed it until now, but why do art, movie, and game projects all use a tally system to determine a rating while blogs and audio (and now threads) use a very simple marker? Wouldn't it make more sense for the marker system to be in place for every project page to remove ambiguity about how stuff should be rated?

I remember Tom mentioning that there were plans to use the simple rating selector (like the one for Audio et al.) for everything. I wish I had that thread bookmarked.

The plan has been to bring the simple selector to the other Portals like Art but they are storing ratings data in an old format that needs to migrate to the "new" system, so it's been waiting on the sidelines for now.
