Hate-promoting submissions 2017-05-31 14:11:18

I've noticed something... Here on Newgrounds, there are several submissions that seem to be direct attacks on certain groups of people. For example, I've seen stuff that's anti-Christian, anti-religion in general, autism jokes, racist jokes, etc.

THERE IS SOMETHING ON THIS IN THE GAME AND MOVIE GUIDELINES: "Your submission must not be racist or downright hateful towards specific groups of people."

A few questions:
-If a submission goes against any of the guidelines, who do I contact about it?
-If I file a report, how long will it take for the report to be reviewed?
-How is it that certain anti-religion submissions have been on here so long without being reviewed by moderators?

I've seen only ONE submission get blammed for going against the rules.

Jokes and satire can still be considered hate speech if they're offensive and/or go against the guidelines.

Noone.

It never should.

Newgrounds is not run by facists.

Watertemple, who is David Duke?

Oh wait, nevermind. I looked up David Duke and he seems to have some, um, interesting views.

I know that Newgrounds isn't run by fascists. Submissions that hate on particular groups of people are against the rules and can get people banned for submitting them.

You do sound like you have no understanding of difference between hateful content, and a satire. What does it even mean to hate on someone? Are we talking about a flash that literally tells us to commit racial cleansing of some place, or are we just talking about a submission where someone used racial slur, like this gem with over 100k views, score over 4, frontpage, daily first and weekly third?

If I got a cent for every actual hateful flash on this site I would be a fucking beggar, because almost noone here actually wants to be hateful or offensive. If you get offended by a flash that's not some kind of child porn then just vote zero and get on with it.

Just flag it and the mods will screen it to see if the contents are bad enough to warrant deletion. If all goes well, you'll even get rewarded some whistle points.

I'm saying that satire can sometimes be hateful. Hating on someone is basically saying or depicting something highly offensive intended to demean them or their racial/ethnic/religious/other group, which isn't allowed on Newgrounds.

no it can't by definition. I don't think you fully grasp what satire is

intended to demean them or their racial/ethnic/religious/other group, which isn't allowed on Newgrounds.

if it's intended to demean then it's not satire

What is highly offensive and what is not? It's a subjective matter and people get offended by everything. Where do you want to draw the line for everyone and why should it be accepted by everyone? This site has kicked off with highly offensive titles decipting at least torture and murder. Tom has started censoring games only after PC jews started bullying him for games like sandy hook.

Don't let yourself be told that comedy can be hateful. You know content is hateful when it's vicious to the point, it's more cringy and uncomfortable than fun. And when it is, it's not comedy. Try making some content yourself and see where other people will try to draw the line for you.

People think it's funny. I don't see why any of this is a problem at all. This platform is infamous for being the home to multiple shooting games, especially involving school shootings. The insensitivity has led to great improvements in art. Newgrounds is one of the last great content hubs of the internet.

More have been blammed for being shitty animations.

There's a huge difference between real comedy and being a downright mean and hateful person. If someone wants to put a submission on Newgrounds, they need to make sure it follows the guidelines. If it doesn't, then it can be blammed before it even makes it past the first judgement. If you put a highly offensive submission on Newgrounds, you'll get a lot of hate. Respect goes two ways; give it in order to get it.

Let me make something clear: If anyone puts any kind of insulting message on here, you will be blocked and reported.

You didn't help yourself.

If you had at least listed some example and/or flag it yourself, something would have been done. Instead all you have been doing is complaining.

Do you have an example of something you think is hate speech? Everyone has their own personal opinion, but generally I think the line should be drawn at something that only serves to incite violence against a person or particular group. I think the term "hate speech" is poor because something can be offensive and hateful without being hate speech. Are the things you want to report really going to cause harm by existing or are they just mean-spirited and you feel like mean art shouldn't exist. It's easy to look at something offensive to your personal values and have knee-jerk reaction, but the value of free speech is that it forces us to engage with ideas that may run counter to ideals we hold as part of the core of who we are as individuals. The looser the definition of hate speech is the more likely a viewpoint that deserves to be heard, offensive though it may be, gets buried.

And as a general history of Newgrounds culture it built its outsider reputation on straddling the line of acceptability. Often the offensive cartoons are more of a cathartic release for people who've felt like outcasts from mainstream institutions or even just a wide swing by people who need to get out some pent up angst out of their system. I think that's a valid form of expression and the average viewer is capable of disseminating the things they see and don't need to be coddled.

That's because us awesome Portal Moderators unpublish 99% of these kinds of submissions within minutes of them being uploaded which means that only a very limited number of people get to see them before they disappear into cyber-nothing.

Also if you check back through the obituaries you'll find that literally hundreds of rule breaking submissions get deleted/unpublished sooner or later. One day last month for example. All removed for rule breaking.

Sorry about that; I didn't know there was an obituaries page and based my opinion on only one submission I saw, but I should have looked more thoroughly.
