I think there are a few animals that can live to be hundreds, even thousands of years old. But I'm pretty sure none of them are known of having higher intelligence, so you'd have to forfeit rational thought, emotions, all the fun stuff, basically.
Most non domestic animals are probably going to die a shitty death, being picked off by a hunter with a sniper rifle is probably vastly better than dying of starvation, disease, infection, injury, etc.
If I really had to make a decision, I'd most likely go with Gorilla. They're intensely powerful, have social structures, relationships, they're predators. You're rolling the dice (AIDS, poachers, etc) but that's just a part of existence, really.
If I could pick how i'd live and go out, well... I'd be the baddest mofo around, slammin all the gorilla ho's, knocking the heads of any dudes that don't respect me, etc. And then one day, right as i'm sliding off my peak, I venture out, watch some zebra's drinking water, bask in the sunlight thinking about how it's a nice day - and bam, a hunter domes me from half a mile away with a .308, lights out. That doesn't sound so bad.

strong, smart, social. i agree with the choice, gorillas are pretty bad ass.
one thing i appreciate about apes/monkeys, like us, they develop social protocols. i believe chimps have around the same number that we do. wild japanese macaques started getting fed by humans and because they had to focus less on survival, new and more numerous ones developed. when humans feed less and life is more difficult, fewer social protocols, which i think is kind of interesting in relation to early human development.

nothing wrong at all, but they don't all live simple lives, some do work pretty hard. i like dogs a lot, the variety, utility, and companionship.
do you have a specific dog breed in mind or lifestyle?
i just wish they lived longer and so many weren't pretty much assured cancers or disease towards the end of their short lives.
