Snowden The movie 2016-09-18 18:27:32

I still haven't watched Snowden but I know what it's about. It's a true story and It kind of freaked me out because of invasion of privacy. I always thought that hackers were the only ones doing it. I never thought that the US government was.. I wonder if they're still doing it?

The Patriot Act hasn't been repealed, so, yeah, the NSA is still doing it.

Also, this is another movie by the guy that did JFK, so... odds are... it'll only bear similarity to reality in passing.

Jeez. Perhaps the next world war will be based on a big invasion... on privacy.

If nothing else, it proves that we're rapidly becoming a society where if you want to keep a secret, keep it to yourself. Your email will be hacked, your friends will post those drunk pics of you, your boss will snoop your credit history and your government will take great interest in that Egyptian vacation you're planning about.

The same is true for everyone else though. I can't wait for Wikileaks to leak about themselves, your friends are dumbasses that out their own secrets, your boss will get caught with child porn on his computer and the government has more leaks and conflicts then just about anything else. It's a changing world.

This is what pisses me off about the Snowden situation. We knew they were doing it. The Patriot Act didn't sneak up on anyone. We let them gather information because if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to be afraid of. We let them subvert due process to better protect us from the *cough* brown people *cough terrorists. It had its detractors, of course. But overall, as a society WE LET IT HAPPEN.

So people getting all high and mighty over it is just a slap in the face. People make bad choices when they're scared. Go ahead and vote for repealing it. But to pretend we weren't bent over willingly taking it for the sake of some momentary feeling of safety is mass delusion.

Agreed on every point. But my point stands. This happened right in front of the faces of the American people.

Neither one of them are heroes, and especially not Snowden, who ran away to Russia because he didn't want to face the music for his crimes. I don't remember heroes running away from their problems, let alone spill secrets when there were legal avenues to do so, (he could've told any Congressman about this for example) but didn't whether through ignorance or delusions of martyrdom. Why do you people are starting to turn on Snowden now when they were siding with him before? Pro tip: It has to do with a ex-KGB agent turned president who hunts shirtless and is trying to invade Ukraine for more than their tracts of land.

I haven't seen the movie yet, so IDK if the movie tries (hopefully) to go the neutral route and see it from both sides of the argument, though I have my doubts on that.

I guess whilstleblowing the horrible shit the NSA is doing is running away from a problem. a real hero would have stood by and watched like a hero

let alone spill secrets when there were legal avenues to do so,

heaven forbid America is forced to change for the better under foreign pressure

The whistleblowing isn't the issue, it's that he ran away from justice afterwards, a real hero doesn't run away from their actions.

a real hero would have stood by and watched like a hero

Since when did heroes ran away from facing the music?

heaven forbid America is forced to change for the better under foreign pressure

Never mind that other countries have their spying programs of their own, I guess they forgot about the part of glass houses and stones. That's not getting into the history of cultural posturing that they are waxing on and on about for the last 100 years or so.

personally I'd love to see him cast as keanu reeves and be portrayed as the hero we needed in this age

Considering your ignorance, if you honestly consider Snowden a hero, I don't want to imagine what you think of a delusional scumbag like Ted Kaczynski. Snowden is no hero and never was one, and if you're deluded enough to think so, you no different than an apologetic enabler.

You got a point. However, I think that the people should be told that their government is watching them.
Imagine you work for a company that keeps track of you even after work. They don't tell you and it's not even part of your contract. Most people want privacy and the people have the right to know. Leaders of every country should notify the people.
