He opened his eyes and felt the tears stream down. He had dreamt of her. Of days long past and what could have been.He lay there, overcome by it all. He allowed himself a small smile as he danced over memories. He turned his head to the right and, as always, she wasn't there. He ran his hand over the space where she could have been. He thought of how many years it had been. How long since his heart went cold.
Life had all but robbed him of his optimism and carelessness, replacing it with a calm demeanor and a distance in his eyes. Many a night had he sat and found himself thinking of her. Even after so long, no one compared. It was all futile, he knew as much. The woman he had loved was gone. She was someone else now. Someone new. More importantly, he wasn't the man she had loved. That version of himself was dead and gone.
Still he found her in his thoughts, indulging in the aching that it brought. The one thing that tethered him to the past he couldn't bring himself to let go of. He returned his gaze to the ceiling and let out a sigh. Wondering if he could feel that way with another. Wondering if his heart could be brought back. If he was even worthy of it. He closed his eyes and drifted off. Walking up the driveway to that knowing smile.
