Anyone who doesn't get killed by Freddy Krueger.
The police. Oh sure they might seem stupid because they come in, look around, don't find anything unusual, dismiss it, etc... but they hardly ever die in those movies.
You could say they're stupid but really they're smart enough to know what's going on -- they just don't want to mess with it so they make excuses and let the dumb blonde cheerleaders and jocks get slaughtered.
And let's face it. The dumb blonde cheerleaders and jocks needed a good slaughtering anyway.

WHY did we have these badass women leads back in the day, but then Prometheus just...they were just whiny and had daddy/abandonment issues. The only person I thought was cool in that entire movie was the captain. </rant>
The only "smart horror movie protagansist" I can think of is this Australian chick in the awful B movie I saw on cable recently. I can't say much w/o spoilers, but let me just say that she kicked major ass.

no that was just luck. if Jason was really smart he'd live out his life after surviving drowning as a kid, grow up amd have a successful life, get surgery on his face, write a book about the terrible experiences he had at camp crystal lake, and get all the bitches.

I hear you man. whenever they do make a strong female lead like in the hunger games and divergent, they the personality of a wooden plank

Well I started watching it and couldn't stop...it was pretty stupid, but still, she was pretty badass.

That guy in Friday the 13th 2 that checked into a hotel. Grade A genius.
Peter (Ken Foree) and Stephen "Flyboy" (David Emge) both from Dawn of the Dead were pretty smart.

Very true.
But that's not a mullet.

The protagonist in You're Next. That was an okay film.
Going back to a theme that was explored here earlier, horror movies get a lot of flak for how they treat female characters and for a large part that's deserved. However, in GOOD horror movies, we get strong female protagonists all the time.
Look at the modern monsters. In the first Nightmare on elm street movie Freddy was defeated by a strong female protagonist. She even came back two more times to kick his ass further. In the first two Friday the 13th movies Mrs. Vorhees and then Jason himself were both bested by strong female protagonists. In Hellraiser the cenobites are defeated by a strong female protagonist. In Silence of the lambs (fuck "psychological thriller" it's a horror movie) Buffalo Bill was taken down by a smart and tough, yet ultimately vulnerable female protagonist.
The absolute strongest female hero in horror, the one who stands arguably as iconic as the villain she thwarts, Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Stroud. She's strong while still being essentially a teen girl. She's resourceful but within reason. But maybe the best thing about her is that because we knew Dr. Loomis was coming she didn't need to be the hero. She could have died. She could have fallen victim and still left us with someone to kill Micheal. But they didn't do this. They had her survive, hurt Micheal and protect those around her even when there was a completely fair way the movie could have ended without her doing this. Then Rob Zombie shit on her.
