Low level southerlies typically become more active during spring. Occasional cold intrusion from the north lifts warm and moist air upwards, creating showers and thunderstorms.
Favorable conditions for heavy rain is offset by a lack of upper level forcing.

Brief analysis:
A weak shear line is present near south China coast and has triggered intense thunderstorms.
Moisture flux is small as low level winds are weak. There is a layer of drier air above warm and moist air mass. Mid level lapse rate is weak. Instability is unusually high for this time of the year as surface temperature and dew points are higher than normal.
Hail and wind threat is higher given the less saturated air aloft and weak moisture flux. Intense thunderstorms are likely to be brief.
Big news. A squall line passes through and brings storm to hurricane force gusts to some areas.
More than 30mm of rain is recorded in most stations in just 15 minutes.
The Red Rainstorm Warning was issued for the first time this year.
The squall line was triggered by strong low level southerlies located just south of a weak convergence zone over inland Guangdong. The dry air mass above the moist layer intensified downbursts and strong gusts.
2 people were killed by severe thunderstorms and 1 is still missing. The Observatory comes under fire for not having an accurate forecast. The chance of severe weather was not mentioned until several hours before the city was affected by a strong squall line.

The road I work on got destroyed, an Aldi's, Chick-fil-A and a pizza place went down, and they're keeping the big mall shut today because the town it's in did an emergency evac last night. The university I go to has an entire power outage and they're closed, and there's high flooding all over the area I'm in. Last night was crazy scary! Thanks for checking in!!

Family is fine, but I was visiting family in Cincinnati over the weekend and had to drive back to my job in D.C. during the storms. I was relatively safe because I wasn't near Dayton when the twisters actually touched down, but I sure did get a lot of warnings...

Apparently storms are predicted to kick our asses here in the Metroplex this evening. Part of me wants to say bring it on but part of me is scared because I just bought a Challenger and I don't want anything to happen to it.
