Lack of imagination on FL Studio 2013-11-03 01:33:50

Hi everyone,

As you can see in the title, I need some help in FL Studio (11) because I have a major lack of imagination.
I always wanted to do some music with whichever programs I could have, but FL Studio by preference.
My music style I like maintaining around are Hardstyle, Jumpstyle, Techno and Trance, but I could get used to some other.
I already have for 5.60 Gb of .WAV samples for FL Studio and some downloaded VSTs (including FL Studio's built-in).
I also have an M-Audio Oxygen 49 MIDI keyboard and a Novation Launchpad.

I appreciate any of your help!
You can also contact me on Skype, if you want (I'm visual...): livestepfreak

Thanks for everyone's help!

imagination and inspiration are overrated. just force yourself to make stuff all the time and even if most of it is shit, some of it will be pretty good.

Yes, but I'm coming to think that I lack of imagination because I have too much samples and VSTs... (If not, prove me wrong?)
:/

Maybe you just lack inspiration instead? Complaining about having too many samples/VST's will probably get some people on here very heated haha...

Anyways, unless it's your day job you don't HAVE to make music 24/7. Sometimes taking some time to enjoy the better things in life will bring about some inspiration to you. Find some new music, get inspired!

Alright then, I challenge you to write a song using only FL default instruments. PM me it when you're done.

its because fl studio is a toy it doesnt even support open sound control

or you need to accept you're not that creative

Without a plan you can jam and record that and sample the good bits

if you only ever limit yourselves to those genres

you will hit writers block big time

just learn your ways around different genres with your own kind of style

and then BAM

you can make songs at ease without pressure

I know how you feel there. I spent most of my life telling myself I wasn't creative and that I had very little imagination. I recently realized that I had been dismissing my creativity as not good enough, and that I had to start somewhere. I don't know if it's the same with you, but either way, telling yourself that you have a major lack of imagination isn't going to help you. I'd say Sequenced and midimachine have it right. Don't try to force yourself into one genre, and just keep making music, you'll get there.

There's more on Soundcloud.

Give yourself a challenge. The one about using only FL's standard instruments is a good one.
Also, you could try and aim for something you're not used to doing. For me, that would be jazz, funk or pop, something like that. In fact, I do this regularly to keep things fresh.
Recently I decided to try something new and came up with something different to anything I've ever done, plus learnt some new things. Try it!

I agree with johnfn. Lack of imagination often comes from having too many choices/options in front of you. If you limit yourself, you'll find that making something good becomes much more manageable.

On a related note, music made out of just FL Studio sounds can be pretty damn good!

You like fast-paced 4/4 music?

Why not do something different for a bit? Try break-styled music out. A lot of it falls within a similar bpm range of your choice 4/4 music.

Also.. there's a shit ton of different sub-genres and styles to really be complacent in just a generalized description of trance. You should ask yourself if your production at all sounds like what you're calling it, and if it does, then seek ways to define yourself from the crowd. There's plenty of options on how to become inspired or involved, I can tell you one thing though, asking people on a forum is not going to be one of the ways. No profound amount of change or revelation ever came from asking questions. You have to discover it.

Haha, no it's not my day job, but eventually I would really want to make it happen! ;)

In that case you really need to find that imagination/inspiration of yours to keep things fresh from day to day work! Coming from experience, there are times I am really not feeling it in terms of being creative with my work, so it's always a good idea to take some necessary time off (if possible) to do things that will recharge your creativity. Saw somewhere that limitation can bring out copious amounts of creativity as well. Maybe you can challenge yourself by limiting yourself to only a few sounds and see how you can make the most out of it.

I know many use templates, but personally I rarely use them. I always start fresh and add instruments if I feel I need them. Of course there are reasons why I need to have a certain group of instruments like if I know what orchestra members will be showing up at my next recording session, or if I'm writing music for a band that has a specific instrumentation.

At least you have come as far to have the tools, now it's time to see what you can do!

Well, I'm gonna try and limit myself to use only the FL built-in VSTs only, just to give it a try.

(Hopefully it will come out not too bad...)

As it is now, I'm starting something on FL Studio with only Sylenth and Harmless.

The song itself looks pretty good by now, but will just have to wait until it's finished to have total critics on it.

You should actually submit a few work of yours, so we can maybe give you some advices on how to become better at certain aspects in producing music

Alright. My two pence.

1) What can you do with FL default VSTs that will blow people's minds away?

2) Are you sure that the lack of inspiration is not coming from hearing too much of the same stuff all the time? (It sometimes happens to me; that's why I ask.)

3) Do you have any circumstances you need to take care of first?

4) If the answer to question 3 is no, then is there a song that you really enjoy listening to, and you want to make something in that style? Try give it your own twist instead.

5) Like someone said; post one or two songs on NG to see if there's anything that can be reviewed, or needs tweaking, etc. We'll be happy to help with feedback.

I've reviewed some songs already... maybe not from those who are helping me, but still did... :/
If this causes a problem, well, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding...
But I made this thread so people can help me with my lack of inspiration, though some of them asked me to upload my actual WIP so the can CnC...

Just get to know one or two VSTs really well and create a separate folder for some of your favorite drum samples and what not and just familiarize yourself with a more condensed arsenal and you will notice that your imagination and creativity can run more wildly =P

I hardly see this as childs play.

Actually it sounds like an awkward use of that tape stop VST. Even the author of those effects uses a different DAW
