But A New Hope wasn't nearly as good as Empire, from a critical perspective.

I'm sure the guy is an okay director. I liked Super 8 at least and some of his other stuff looks good too. I just can't get very psyched about another trilogy in what is already the most milked film franchise in history though. It might turn out okay, but come on...
