What determines the "hot topic"? 2012-02-23 12:40:06

Does anyone know what exactly the BBS main page uses to decide which thread is the current "hot topic"? I can't see much rhyme or reason to most of its choices so far.

The hot topic is determined as the topic with the most posts in it in a short time span. Say a topic that has just started has about 20 posts in it in five minutes, this will be the hot topic if no other topic has a quicker rate of reply than it.

That doesn't mean there isn't any.

Thread that has been created in the last 7 days that has reached 30 posts (including the original post, so number of replies + 1) that has not previously been a hot topic. The criteria might change in future, though. We've been keeping records of that stuff for the past year or two, so the data was always there, it just wasn't on show until the redesign.

So any thread that fits all of those can be the hot topic? Is the choice random beyond that?

How does it decide when to change the hot topic, too?

Yes.

No.

Whenever the criteria above has been met.

No.

I get the feeling any more information on what is going on in the programming would lead to it being abused by idiots fighting over the hot topic space and spamming whatever other action(s) it takes into account.

Fair enough then. I was just curious anyway, and I suppose I know all I need to now. Ta Jim.

Eh? You've been told how everything works. I didn't leave anything out. Like I wrote, the criteria may change in future, but what I told you as of when I wrote it was correct. There's nothing more to it than what I've already explained.

Damn. I don't remember being this dumb.

What I was thinking of is what happened when more than one thread fills all the criteria at the same time, but now I've re-read it, I think you already answered that question: Whichever one reaches 30 replies first gets the spot, and stays there until another thread less than a week old gets 30 posts afterward.

OK; I'mma go shut up now. : /

I wish there was a way to make it determin by the post/views ratio. That would be cool.
