So Apparently I'm A Dj Meow. Jul. 17th, 2011 @ 09:46 PM Reply

So yeah. As of right meow, I am a DJ. I had my first ever show on the 4th of July in front of a small crowd of about 30 people. There were two professional DJs there and they invited me to come along for shits and giggles, so I prepared a few nights beforehand and got together a nice mix of Drum n Bass, Trance, and Dubstep with an ambient buildup.

I approached the table around 10:30 or so and they told me it was my turn to fuck around, so I was like OH OK LULZ and I opened up Djay Pro and got to work on my Macbook. Well, after fifteen minutes of playing a house Dj by the name of Ionic Phunk came up to me and said I was really fucking good. Now, at first I thought he was kidding but then I looked at the crowd and saw how they reacted to my "witty" transitions and stuff. The other DJ also said I was really good, and even claimed I was better at it than him. *although he does kind of suck... lululul*

Well, I got a gig at a club now thanks to Ionic Phunk and am getting ready to play my first real show! I am thinking of streaming it live for anyone who cares. I personally find it pretty easy to transition and remix songs using other songs, but everyone who listened to me DJ claimed I was really good... so I guess I just got an ear for that thing or something.

Well, in any case, I am having a lot of fun practicing and hopefully I will be able to do a show with the sexy Devon Taylor (EchozAurora). He lives pretty close to me actually. I need to get myself an actual simple mixer.. but surprisingly using the trackpad on a MAC works pretty well, as long as you dont fuck up and slip your fingers while doing a smooth transition.

STAY TUNED FOR ATTENTION WHORE PICTURE.

I've been a DJ for years, and I see many decent DJ's with a similar setup to what you have.

Then again, having a mixer, and vinyl turntables with a laptop is amazing for crowd pleasers.

Also Devon's a really experienced DJ, I've known him (on and off basis,) for quite some time. Did a collab with him an ever so long time ago, if you need any advice he's the guy to go to.

If he's not around feel free to message me, I check NG at least once a day.

This mostly says left is the norm, however, several people did mention breaking the norm. I guess whatever's most comfortable for you, but left arm is the usual one to use.

Oh, and I just recorded a practice round for my next show! It's over 20 minutes long, but it'd be cool if someone could listen to it and give me some pointers. Burn it to a CD and play it in the car or something.

I always wear my watches on the right arm :<

My DJ setup is roughly the same except I use Deckadance. A controller/mixer probably would be handy but I cbf investing money in since I got my copy of Deckadance free anyway (won it).

FatKidWithAJetpack:

Listened to your mix, and I really don't know what sort of DJ you're trying to be. But in the eyes of a DJ that does DNB, Dubstep, Hardcore/Gabber, Hardstyle, and Electro House... it was a very slow start for a mix.

I mean it's not an awful start, but if you're not planning on being a wedding DJ, you need a faster more energetic start. People love energy, seamless transfers, and a few crowd pleasers here and there. Like using samples from popular songs (no you can't get in trouble for sample usage DJ'ing live.)

Overall the transfers I've heard aren't that bad, but slow starts always make it a bad mix (in my opinion.) Now keep in mind you want the crowd to be dancing and getting into the music, not sitting on a couch crying and telling others their emotions and tearing up. Also don't randomly brake in the song, or mess with it too much that changes the overall pitch of it. Though crowds like it, I personally hate it, if I hear a track I like being messed with like that it just overall annoys me.

Word of advice, if a concert it themed for a genre, you don't have to be one dimensional, experiment with shit that's relatively the same BPM and style of the genre, then you can get props for being more original than other DJ's.

Also don't focus on the crowd too much, keep yourself busy, prepare yourself ahead of time.

One more thing, DJ babble is annoying as fuck. Though the kiddies like it, if you're planning on getting big (Netherlands big,) you'll want to let the music speak for you. Keep in mind the crowd may still like interactivity, but be reasonable about what you do.

If you want my personal opinions on the tracks

1st Track - Didn't prefer it, I don't really like intro's where females have to sing through 3/4ths of the song. Never did never will, just my preference though.

2nd Track - Not bad... but it's not incredibly interesting, good way to get the crowd into music like this? Boost the bass on the EQ, add your own effects, use a beatgrid, or a kaosscillator / kaoss pad and make that track your own!

3rd - Good Dubstep track, very basic dubstep track, but good. That honestly should've been your start.

4th - Not a bad DNB track, has groove, has bass. Interesting overall.

5th - Loved the track, more DNB greatness.

6th - Great dubstep track, no issues with it.

I gotta say the mix progressed and got a lot better as it went along, you have potential. You're already very decent and I suggest you don't give up on this hobby, could earn you some money someday!

Good luck in your venture FKWAJ, hope to see you on stage sometime!

THIS. I saw Chuckie about a month or so ago and he was literally the most annoying DJ I've seen. He literally turned down the volume 3+ times to ask the crows "who likes house music?". The first time I was all like, "YEAH HOUSE MUSIC!". Then I was like, "uhhh..yeah...house music". Then I was like, "Shut the fuck up".

Thanks for your comments Chemich! Personally, I looovvvee slow starts to a mix. I want to try to really build it up. Overall, I'm trying to be an all genre sort of DJ with no specific intentions for an overall goal. I plan on making every mix different in some way or theme. I am working on the intro right now, as I noticed there were some flaws with the seamless transfer into techno that I was trying to achieve.

Everyone has their preferences, and I understand that, but I am trying to introduce people to different styles mainly. I have only been working on mixes for a little over a week, so I still am very much a beginner lol.

Thanks again for listening! Means a lot ;)

This made me happy.

And gratz on the gig, after the rave I went to last night I've had a few people ask me if I'd like to do a show at some point, mostly because my best friend was drunk and making me out to be some kind of music god. But I don't own ANY gear tailored towards DJing... Not even a laptop. I have gear for playing guitar live, that's about it.

Oh... one day. I've got like 3 separate fan bases, one for metal, one for classical, and one for my electronic (Trance mostly, a little DnB, then some stuff I don't even know what to call).... Keeping everyone happy is difficult.

That annoys the hell out of me as well. I will never will I ever ever ever pick up a mic and start talking to the crowd in the middle of a mix. It just looks attention whorish. I will talk to the crowd after the mix is done when I leave the stage face to face with whoever wants to talk, but I won't go up there and say anything more than HIYAH PALS IM DJ SICK NUMBLES *or something* AND THIS IS MY MIX... YO.

well I'm a DJ with good humor, and I wear a mask for a reason, as well as masking my default talking voice.

Normally at the beginning of my mixes I'll say something awkward just to get the crowd on a good note.

Examples:
"Hey everyone... so the DJ that was in this spot dropped out... and they put me in clothes, put a mask on me, and are giving me a few bucks just to play music... anyone know where the free buffet is that I was promised? if I was lied to I'm going back to my cardboard box."

"anyone know what any of these fucking records are? the hell is sandstorm? fuck it"

"Hi everyone" *instantly begins intense song"

Humor really get's the crowd going.

One cool thing a DJ did at a rave was have everyone get down on the ground. Then as soon as the bass drop everyone jumped up and danced like madmen. That shit was so cash.

FKWAJ, the point of practice is to get better, takes awhile before you can do like I do and take random songs you don't even know and make an amazing mix out of them. lol

So after listening, I like it quite a bit. I like how you blended some Deadliest Warrior voice samples in there. Although I do agree, the mix started pretty slow. But, I'm sure I'd enjoy clubbing to that mix. Nice, overall.
