I was working on a hardstyle song and then threw in a jazz breakdown. In my defense I was *really* drunk! :3
Although the jazz bass solo was sexy as fuck!
I tend to
1. make a song outline
2. put a jazz in it
I don't experiment with genres... I make what I feel like making, and to hell with what people would label it as.

I like to mix Reggae beats and Drum and Bass. I think I'll call this new genre....dubstep.
Everything I make is a mixture of genres, because I don't command one of them well.
This would be the most obvious one

Forgot to shave half your head.

I think it's more a derivative of Dub
Whatever kind I write just comes out as whatever I feel like playing. It's usually rock music because most of my songs I write on the guitar, but I write a lot of non-rock songs that never see the light of day (probably because they're no good).

No, trust me, nobody should hear it, haha

haha, I would but it's on a friend's laptop. If I ever finish it up I'll be sure to shoot you a copy.

A hardstyle tune with a jazz breakdown? Hell yeah.
I implore you to do it as well. It'll definitely be interesting to hear.
Huge hint when it comes to music: try not to give labels to yourself, as not to limit yourself. Try flowing through styles and stuff, and keep your music fresh... just don't get too avant-garde :P
Have you listened to any of my songs? My whole repertoire is a bunch of genre bending experimental music.

Do you even know what dub music is? If you did I couldn't possibly see you making this kind of connection.

Dubstep in its origins sounded sort of like dub. Not sure it derived from dub though.
I thought that dubstep was derived from 2-step garage and grime? Seems like any resemblance to dnb and dub reggae came about as it evolved. When it comes to the dnb link, keep in mind that dubstep was nowhere near as upfront as it is now.

Yes I know what dub is. I don't really mean the typical dubstep you hear today, but when I listen back to stuff from years ago I clearly hear a dub influence with the shuffled drums, reverb/delay, and heavy bass.

I don't often attempt to actually mix up genres, but I suppose it sort of happens when I just aim to make some music in a pre-chosen genre, and fail to stick to that genre properly, causing the song to be a sort of mix-up between the genre I was aiming for and a genre I'm more used to making.
Must be fun to actually try and mix two distinct genres though, I should give it a go some time.

I agree. People put more stock in genres than music itself. When I started making music I just wrote whatever came out. After 3 years of refining that technique, I have the style I do now. It is much more fulfilling to develop your own style than to imitate music that already exists.
