40 is a sitch. I can bench press 40 reps of 47.5 kg.

Right, I've just tried and managed 28 in one go. If I really pushed myself, I could get into the mid-30s, but I got lazy and gave up.
Well i play football so im kinda a cheater but i usually do sets of 35 with my max being 100 that i tested about 2 months ago.

Depends. Anyone who actually does push-ups regularly or trains bench press should be able to sail through 40.
As a benchmark, I'd say I'm in decent all-around shape, but I do neither of those things. Lemme check how many I can do: 34
So 40 is pretty realistic for anyone who really trains them. I was doing that a few years back, and I broke 70.
I just did 25, could have done better if I wasn't already sore.
I've increased my push ups by a lot over the past month...i used to only be able to do like 5 or so, but now i can do around 20. i've been using this program you all might be interested in called One Hundred Push Ups...it's supposed to only take six weeks to build your strength to be able to do 100, but for me, arms and chest are hard to build, but on their other program (Two Hundred Sit Ups), i've increased my sit ups from about 15 to almost 75 in a few weeks. it all depends on your genetics i guess.
(those are free btw...they've also got a 50 pull ups & 200 squats program)

Its got nothing to do with genetics if you ask me.
'Consistancy' is your key to building strength. Turn your body into a cycle, if your training hard enough, your next training day will come at the exact time you've regenerated, and on clock.
Like I train on Tuesdays, then Fridays, then Saturdays.
Tuesday - Friday I'm rebuilding my muscles but only because I've conditioned them like that. Friday is MMA day. Saturday is strength day.
See what I'm saying brah?
does it really matter?
last time i checked, somewhere around 20 or so, but that was awhile back
Around 15. Not bad for someone like me.

I can do 20+ honest push ups. And when i mean honest i mean using the fists and go slowly, 2 seconds up 2 seconds down
