Does incest really cause defects? 2009-05-22 04:48:34

And no, I am NOT into incest, and I might as well say I am not a Furry and never was or will be.
But I need someone to explain, how does incest cause birth defects?
I just need a scientific explanation.
It's just hard to tell whether it's true or if it's just a joke.

That and I'm an uneducated moron.

Because most birth defects are caused by recessive genes. That is a gene that needs to be present in both matching chromosomes in order to be expressed. In other words BOTH parents must carry the gene in order for it to be expressed in offsrping.

If the two parents are related, they share a percentage of their genes (as they in turn inherited them from their parents). Thus the likelihood of a recessive gene that causes a defect being expressed is much higher in related couples than in unrelated couples.

It should be noted that related couples don't ALWAYS produce babies with defects (its possible that the parents don't carry any recessive defect genes, or that only of them inherited it from their parents and therefore only one can pass it on), just that the probability is significantly higher.

There are two types of genotypes, recessive and dominant. A dominant gene will override a recessive one, as shown below. Imagine a capital letter representing a dominant gene:

Rr

This means the organism will display the dominant characteristic. However, if both of the parents have the recessive gene, then the organism will have a double recessive genotype:

rr

Because damaging traits are usually of the recessive type, this is how inbreeding leads to defects.

think about it every human on the planet has 98% of similar DNA tracks
parnet and offspring have 99.2% of similarity's (same goes for brother or sister)
each sperm/egg has what i do believe is 23 chromosomes when those extra strands of dna connect it creates another chromosome
which creates problems such as diabetes, obesity etc.

Yes, it does. When you bleed, a scar forms and you eventually recover, right?

If you have a child with your sister, then there's a chance scars won't be able to form. This means that when you bleed, you bleed.

So if you don't have children, nothing can happen.

Higher chance, and blah.

I still can't get over the fact that two cousins get shit all over for having sex. I knew a couple who were cousins, and they'd get fucked with about it all the damned time, but they didn't care, they just really liked each other.

I don't see a problem with incest unless it's a parent fucking their children.

Brb, need to masturbate.

I realise my use of the comma is pretentious as fuck, but it's habit.

Thanks to Mr. MuffDiver for the sig.
