I'd count that as 3/4. I'm no expert at music theory though, I can't even make the difference between 3/4 and 6/8...

The song you posted is certainly not really slow 4/4 though. If it was then you'd have to use a tonne of triplets and stuff when it's so much easier to make it 3/4 (or 6/8).

That's kind of what I figured, as a rule, I would generally go with the time signature that's faster (Unless it was something ridiculous like 200+ BPM)... But that's always bugged me, and I wanted a second opinion, because I've done both in the past, wrote stuff slow 4/4, and counted it as fast 3/4, then wondered if it would have been easier to just write it in 3/4 in the first place.

Certainly some triple meter, which one you choose to call them depends entirely upon your mood. I'd definitely call the second one 6 something due to the typical kick hat hat snare hat hat pattern.

The only time that's really a question is in songs with swing rhythm like this- it seems to be in 4/4 but when you listen closely it could also be thought of as an extremely fast triple meter, like 24/32 or something.

Yeah, I think, with a little playing around in approximately the same BPM (In 3/4) as the first song I linked, I've figured out why I had a bad habit of writing in really slow 4/4 as opposed to 3/4 at a brisker pace... When I listen to a click at that pace, regardless of time signature or the style of song I'm trying to write in, I have a tendency to play faster, which in turn ruins the mood I was going for.

Guess that's something I'm gonna have to work on, because the stuff linked above is pretty much a sampling of my favorite style of music... yet I have very few, if any, songs that reflect that.

Anyways, thanks guys, I'll practice a bit more playing in 3/4... try avoid my metal instincts kicking in.

I write all of my music at 120bpm with the grid and note snapping turned off, just to challenge myself a bit y'know?

And why's that? 4/4 at 41 BPM means that the person who made it had to use a bunch of triplets or stuff when 3/4 is a lot more fitting for the melody. 41 BPM is crazy slow too and it makes no sense to use it when there's an easier alternative at a more natural BPM.

Your not crazy. Don't go around making threads with questions like that. Use your "Modly Powers" right.

Personally I see nothing wrong with him making a thread asking about time signatures, but that's up to the BBS mods to decide. Also he's only an audio moderator. That has nothing to do with being a forum moderator.

Oh and nice job steph. Back-From-Purgatory isn't a he.

Is that so?

Is it a swing rhythm? No? Not 4/4.

Response to The Audio Forum Lounge 2011-09-12 09:58:04

The first one was obviously 3/4. Listen to where the accents are or just count it out if you get stuck, it's not rocket science guys.

not realizing that you didn't have a battery in it is pretty impressive.

Might be your charger. I had a phone charger that would literally show me the progress of charging my phone (light would turn green when it was done too) and as soon as I unplugged it, the battery would go to 0 and die...

It's not a he, it's an adpositional phrase.

So that's probably why we're prone to giving the forum mods here the stink eye, when they show up.

Dang, LO beat me to the punch by a minute!

And yes it is true that a number of "yellows" out there are retired, but there still may be bones in some of us that are spoiling to pick out our golden liasons, just because we know of...the color.

Well, the beginning had me thinking 2/4... Then the song kicked in and I wasn't even sure it was music. So I really couldn't say.

Its more comparable to women in NASCAR or formula 1. Or good black quarterbacks in the NFL.

They CAN exist, and when they do exist people go crazy over them.

dont watch formula 1 much though.

Just one question: What DAW in the world right now needs a video card like that????

Response to The Audio Forum Lounge 2011-09-12 18:16:18

Oh sorry, missed the "games" line.

128-bit appears to be the highest you can go with a computer these days, at least by video (recall my electronics instructor saying that personal computers will never be on par with game consoles in terms of bit-age, though I've gathered online that today's consoles actually have no higher bit-tage than the Dreamcast (I personally doubt consoles like the PS3 would actually be that "close to home" so to speak).

Go for it!

Response to The Audio Forum Lounge 2011-09-12 18:28:45

Now I'm no genius, but to me, 128 bit architecture would be either severely under-utilized, or a useless gimmick based on an obscure technicality/constrained to a very specific subsystem.
