Since it didn't reach page 50 (Even our spam didn't help :P) can't anyone post the list in a new thread and lock it instead of having to link to page 999 all the time? It would be a lot better, only one post with no spam.

why doesnt someone take all the AS:MAIN topics and turn them into a very large flash tutorial

Not a bad idea. Someone with a lot of spare time should do it, or maybe script a bot to read Denvish's txt file and do it for us.

That would be pointless :P AS: Main is made to learn various subjects, not just get lost in a HUGE tutorial.

Why doesn't someone take the ASS: Main topics and publish them as a book?

Toast, have you changes your aura? I hate the colour for dark; too much contrast :(

Also, I didn't realise you had so little EXP before :P

lol, I've missed less than ten in the last year and a half :P Even when I went to Spain last year I managed to get internet access.

Nice to see you've come back to the light side, anyway.

And the timing of that lock was totally inconvenient. It would have been better just to stay on page 48.

You know... Tom should just make a dedicated page for AS: Main. Then Denvish will just decide whether or not a new tutorial for AS: Main should go to AS: Main.

Sure; let's start spamming!

How many numbers do you know? This is my favorite:

amirite?

To me, that's the best idea. I'd like newgrounds.com/phpmain

But anyway, something has to be done. Right now, AS: Main is basically use less. The tutorial update wasn't posted on the last page, so linking to page 9999 will take people to a non updated page :(

Response to AS: Main suggestion 2006-08-26 10:53:21

Comon' guys :(

If you told me a week ago AS: Main would end with a spammed up page and no update, I would have said you're crazy.

If we can't think of anything better to do, then someone just post it in a thread like Toast said. At least that makes it usable.

Blah. I just deleted a load of crap from pages 48 & 49. I appreciate the fact that people don't want AS: Main to die, but the fact is, it's not dead, and the lock will prevent people from spamming it with stupid posts.

I also understand that some people want to keep it open so that users can continue to add tuts, but you have to understand that the primary reason for its creation was to answer newb questions - with the number of tutorials in there, it was just becoming intimidating for those guys.

As for making it a Flash tutorial; the whole concept of it was that it would be a comprehensive, text/forum based solution, which would help the Flash Forum regs by just allowing them to type a link to AS: Sound or whatever, rather than having to type out all the related info every time a question was asked. Yes, it could be converted into Flash: but that wasn't the original purpose for its existence.

Dedicated page? No need. The NG tut page links to page 9999 of AS: Main. That'll do just fine. And if AS: Main Mk II, or AS3: Main is ever created, AS: Main will be the first link on every new page.

People should continue to write tutorials, if they want to, particularly on AS3 subjects. When and if the new AS thread appears, whether it be created by me, or by someone else with me on hand to delete crap, they can be filtered and added from the offset. That way, it won't take 10 pages before the list gets properly established.

Finally, I sincerely apologise to those who opposed the locking of AS: Main, but I'm sure you can understand why it had to be done. As I said at some point, it was getting to be too much of a beast for any newb to venture into without a clear head. AS: Main was my baby, and although I'm aware that MANY others donated their time and knowledge, as the creator of the thread, it's my right to have it locked. It's still there as a reference point, don't stop referring people to it, or to the threads linked from it... don't let all that work and community spirit go to waste.

Thanks Denvish. Now it's good because the old links are usable and we can keep using the same link.

Once again, thank you for your dedicated work. Your idea has helped so many people, including myself with ActionScript and game creation.

Dude, I didn't know you could delete stuff from locked threads, let alone admin-locked threads. Mods are even more awesome than I gave them credit for :P

And the last page was a bit silly, to say the least. 48 isn't a bad number; it was fine to just leave it as it was there. Honestly, all those spam posts just got out of hand. It'd have been better to see two pages of people saying how useful it had been and posting suggestions for new threads than a load of random spam crap.

I think what happened to AS: Main happened to it because it became so huge. Maybe there should be a AS: Basics, AS: Intermediate, and AS: Expert. That could clear out some confusion and get it more organized. AS: Main's purpose isn't ONLY to help the 'newbs', it also helps people who wrote tutorials and more experimented users.

Yeah, I mean; I've been scripting for over a year and gotten quite good at a lot of it. However, there are still aspects I know nothing about, such as saving and loading, bitmap data (never got around to it) and 3D stuff, loats of stuff to do with trig... and if I wanted to start on any of those things an AS:Main tutorial would make a great launch pad.

I'm not sure it's a very good idea to lock AS: Main, as you all know NG's crappy search system's priority is how new the topic is, and not how much it ressembles to what you wrote in the search bar. That means that if no one replies it's gonna be very hard to find it with the searchbar.

Really though, I think locking it is a bad idea :( at least seperating in 3 threads - the 3 difficulties, or someting like that...

there should be a as: main collab where heaps of people get together to cover ALL of the topics, i`d do it on my own if i had to, great idea!

Yeah, but that would make it even harder to find what you want through the search bar :D.
Aren't they changing the search system anyway, so thats not too much of a problem :).

Happy Level 19 Denvish :D.
