Doctor Midnight, Burning Escape

Author Comments

This is the longest piece I've ever uploaded to Newgrounds.

*crowd cheers*

The movements are as follows...

Medice (Doctor): 0:01-2:43
Noctis (Midnight): 2:44-4:53
Igneus (Burning): 4:55-12:13
Evolo (Escape): 12:14-14:13

Igneus is the longest and most intricate of the movements. I have written a truncated movement without the eerie introduction. I was trying to figure out a way to replicate Penderecki's musical style in standard notation with Igneus as well (as opposed to the wacky and difficult notation he uses in Threnody and similar pieces). So, there is a standard score that accompanies this.

I began writing this Halloween of last year with Noctis, and it has expanded into this four movement work.

Noctis is actually the most difficult of the pieces as it is in F Minor which can be tricky for string players, but it can also be transposed to A minor, it just doesn't have the darkness needed to be included in this quintet arrangement.

::A mix of the Total Composure Orchestra and Squidfont.::

It's a long story about how I conceptualized this, but I had a dream one night which features a plague doctor who ran into a burning building to rescue one of his loved one's. The fire was put into place to prevent the plague from spreading, but the Doctor had faith that he could cure his loved one. After the rescue, the Doctor needed to make a speedy escape out of the city to complete treatment on his patient and loved one. That is what the story here is anyway.

Thanks for listening. Enjoy! Don't listen in a dark room!

Extra Notes:

I have an extra set of notes which accompany each piece and explain some of the logic behind the individual movements and how they are connected (the mix, dynamics, tonal center etc, etc). Unfortunately there is a limit on how much text can be added to the full description, but if anyone is interested, just send me a PM and I can link you to some more elaboration. Thanks!

Alright. I finally got some time to listen to the whole thing.

Simply but, I think it's quite amazing. The style seems very similar to some scores for older movies, especially mystery and horror themed.
Most of the composition is good, even though it may be a bit simple at points. I would've probably given this a 4.5 by itself, but with this lenght and consistensy, it easily deserves a 5.

Needless to say, this is better background music than it is standalone music though!

Either way, brilliant job ;)

Lucid,

Thank you very much for the review! I am definitely a fan of older film scores and probably picked up a few tricks listening to them over the years.

I'm happy that you enjoyed the composition as well, minimalist music is something I enjoy quite a bit but I see what you mean about the simplicity of certain areas of the piece, that may be where the influence comes from.

I'd love to work with someone one day on getting this set to some sort of visual medium, we'll see what the future holds!

Thanks Lucid!
