I actually started this one weeks ago and worked on it intermittently ever since. Finally wrapping it up now.

I REALLY like this one. I unconsciously start bobbing my head every time I work on it. And it has this really awesome vibe to it! Man I just like the progression so much. Alright, I think I've tooted my own horn enough. :P

Inspired by Fearofdark (MAN ALL MY MUSIC IS INSPIRED BY THAT GUY THESE DAYS) Seriously listen to this album you will not regret it https://fearofdark.bandcamp.com/album/motorway

Only because I don’t give 5s. It’s more like a 4.7. The Fearofdark vibes kicked in as soon as the song got going, it feels so much like Spectronosis with the chill, recognizable, and distinguishable melody. I can see a 5 coming upper way if you keep it up! I can only barely resist it now...

I really like this one a lot it has a certain sound and mood about it that reminds me of some things.

johnfn responds:

Hmm that is fairly ambiguous but who am I to judge! Thanks!

I love the synth at the beginning. It starts really tranquil and groovy, and you leave yourself a lot of space for contrast, which you totally capitalize on at :10. Very catchy stuff. I love the complex texture of this one. At :40, those floating counter-melodies add a lot to the piece, and I appreciated when you seemed to bring them more upfront in the mix at around the 1-minute mark. The transition at 1:10 could've been a little smoother, to be honest, but OH MY GOD YOU'RE JUST A CATCHY MELODY MACHINE...was my response to 1:14. :D I enjoyed the transition into 2:13, though - the slide method simply appeals to me, is all. ;) I have to say: your mixing has improved by leaps and bounds since when I first clicked on one of your tracks over 2 years ago now. I thought the ending was a bit inconclusive, but you at least partially made up for it with the little portamento and reverb thing at the end. Overall, great work! Insta-faved and DL'd. ;) Keep up the great work, Johnfn! ^^

> The transition at 1:10

Hah yeah you caught me. I knew I could do better but I realized I might not finish the piece unless I wrapped it up soon, and I couldn't think of a better transition in the moment. So .. :P

> OH MY GOD YOU'RE JUST A CATCHY MELODY MACHINE

lolololol. Pretty much. :D Actually you'd be surprised how long it took me to come up with that melody. For a couple of days at least I would keep coming back to that section to see if I could come up with a good melody for the breakdown. Eventually I found one!

> Mixing

It's all about those loud drums :P :P Also, not abusing reverb like I used to. That one is big, too.

> Ending

This actually ticks me off slightly because I *did* have a better ending, but then I accidentally overwrote it and couldn't figure out what I had done -_- So annoying!

Anyway I'm glad you liked this one so much! Thanks for another lovely review.

Still as awesome as ever huh?

This is one catchy song! The main melody is so simple (to the most mart), but sooo good! I usually don't like this amount of repetition, but when it's pulled of this well, with so much going on around the melody, it works really well!
Gotta say, you know I'm loving that piano rhythmic action. Only place I think it sounds a bit weird is when it is barely hearable (like after 1:10-1:41). It gives me some kind of weird feel there, like it almost has a purpose there, but still not. I think it should be a bit louder, or not there at all, but maybe my ears are having a weird day XD

Overall though, I have nothing to complain about! Love the transitions and parts, and besides the thing I mentioned, the mixing is impeccable.

Awesome job; keep it up ;)

johnfn responds:

Yeah, repetition can be either the best thing or the worst thing. For example, one of my favorite songs, All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem, essentially just repeats the same short piano riff... FOR 8 MINUTES. And yet by the end you're like 'omg this riff is AWESOME!'

I always wanted to write a song like that, but I haven't found a riff that good yet... :P

> piano rhythmic action

Actually it's not a piano at all! I was fooling around with Zebra and I made that sound totally by accident. I like it a lot though.

> 1:10-1:41

Yeah I get that. I put it in there so you have some sense of what the progression is, but it might be a little bit too quiet.

I'm glad you liked it ^_^
