Wow, just barely got this up in time. The strange thing about this track is that I broke my speakers beforehand, and thus this was almost entirely mixed on two sets of headphones. I also had limited chances to reference it on some car speakers (twice), a different pair of speakers (once), as well as some earphones I had lying around (once or twice). Therefore, if something sounds off, maybe that's it, or maybe I just suck huehuehue

Anyway, I had to think of a title last minute, so I hope you'll find it appropriate. No story this time either, but it's okay because there's a terrible synthesized alto saxophone there instead.

hurr durr

So please enjoy, let me know what you think.

This is my submission for the knockout round of the Official Newgrounds Audio Underdogs Competition.

The harmonic colors you have here is wonderful be it be the chords you used or the synths/instrumental you used it is stellar makes me feel like im falling in slow motion. the mix is great and the mastering is good. maybe a little more bass just to make it a little less flat but the overall production is well done.. so uhh cheers!

Now as for composition its not bad but i feel like there is so much more you can do to this like maybe a really cool synth adlib. cos at times it feels like some section of the song is nothing but a chord progression. its asking for more melodic lines! doens't have to be well formed. you can adlib the shit out of this song hehe and the ending couldve been better but it works

overall its a lovely piece. there is this prog/space rock vibe to it. its just that you can do so much more to this piece. nice work

Thanks for the kind words!

Every time someone complements my mastering, I think back to the five minutes I spend on each song doing a quick EQ/compression job, and I get confused. I never think I'm doing it right, but whatever, it's not the most important part anyway!

All the bass comes from the main pad, so it sounds wonky sometimes. Didn't know how it would turn out. Thanks for letting me know.

This kind of song really does beg for a solo/adlib section, doesn't it? Maybe that's what it's missing. Noted!

I'll be sure to keep on truckin'; thanks man.

I like the powerful chords at the beginning and the warm mood. The saxophone was a nice touch. It really adds to the chill, yet also quirky mood. I think it may have progressed a little slowly, at least for the first couple of minutes or so, but the part at 1:19 really did something for me. I think it was nice how you found a way to contribute to that chord progression meaningfully. It is a little minimalistic for most of the track, though. There are a couple of transitions that may just need a sweep or crash or something to make this flow as smoothly as the chords, 2:10 for example. I think the lack of fill is somewhat made up for by the mood and interesting structure you have here, and I like the pulsing riser/effect that begins at around 2:34. The breakdown that occurred just after the 3-minute mark also added some structural relief, and I like how you have that re-intro before the variations at 3:55. That said, I don't think this piece needed to be 6 minutes long. It struggle to hold my attention for that long, as most of it consists of variations on one rather simple chord progression. I think you could've even just looped it off at 3:29 and it would've gotten the job done. It does have an interesting sense of direction about it, though, but perhaps I would've liked to see a little more melodic and harmonic development. An interesting piece, and great for just chilling to, but stand-alone I'd say it needs to be a little less...bare and repetitive. Good job with the mixing, instruments, effects, and structuring though! Keep at it, Birdinator99. ;D

Birdinator99 responds:

Chill! I love that word -- glad I'm falling in that category. It's really my jam, honestly. Everyone needs to relax, so why not put it to music?

I enjoy the minimalistic transition at 2:10. I'll have to disagree with you there. The rising effect at 2:34 is great for thickening up that section -- makes it more intense, you know?

The repetitive nature of the song is something I anticipated judges to take issue with. I wanted to challenge myself to think about layering sounds more to maintain listener interest, while using the same chords the whole time. I wouldn't want to make this a loop, but yeah I could have ended it halfway. I felt like I had to more to say, though. I wanted to bring back the alto sax, but to do so before 3:29 might've been too soon.

If I could do it again, I might add a melody, but I would keep the length overall. It doesn't feel "bare" to me, but this kind of stuff isn't exactly crowd-pleasing, so it might feel bare compared to other genres you like.

Glad you liked it for the most part. Thanks for judging AND hosting!

Take care!

Holy-

Dude, this is sick. The chords were what pulled me in immediately - the uniqueness compared to many of the tracks produced nowadays really sets this apart. I'm getting a big New Wave/Slow Funk revival feel to this, and hot damn I love it. The one thing that bothers me is the reverb delay is a bit much, it stretches into the other chords and gives it a little bit too much dissonance for my liking.

When the sax comes in at :26, really nice meshing of the sounds here. Honestly, I can't even tell that it's synthed, and in this case it might even be better because you want a smooth sustained alto sound to continue that chill, slow feel, and the real alto might have some unwanted blips. Great job keeping the melody simple, it's easy to overcomplicate it.

At 1:18, when the ride cymbal comes in along with the slow arppegiator, love the more energetic feel here. You've got a really really classic structure in this piece and it fits so well! Nice touch with the sidechain on the main pad, it helped to keep the mix in check. At 1:44, that transition is really nicely done - love that high pluck, keeps things interesting and it had a really nice triplet roll intro!

After that, you did a nice job calming down the track to give the listener some rest from the main section, and I'm glad you started changing up the drum patterns here because I was starting to get some fatigue. I would have liked a variation to the alto melody around 2:50 when it picks up a little, perhaps with a different instrument, but I do like the little chord instrument with the alternate melody around 3:05! Nice calm part here, but it would have helped to add a little fade tail to each lead note to help give the fading feel at this part.

From there, not many other complaints. Solid mixdown and great synths. Nice slow ending. I really enjoyed this and I hope you continue this way!

NGAUC Knock-out Round Review

Birdinator99 responds:

I know what you mean about the chords, man. Once I stumbled upon them, I knew that with the right instrument, they would sound really good!

Unique is a word I've heard describing my tracks before; glad to keep that going.

In retrospect, this song is too wet for its own good, something that's more obvious when played back on larger speaker setups, something I didn't have much access to at the time, unfortunately.

Haha, that alto. I guess it helps when it's surrounded by synths and organs, but really it's not a great sound in solo.

At 1:18, that's the hi hat, bro! The sidechaining was an impulse decision, and I'm glad it payed off. That triplet roll was something I had in my head for a long time. It was exciting to finally record it.

I wanted to bring the alto back at some point, which is why it's playing the chords starting at 3:55. It fades a little on each note, but yeah it could use more.

You bet I'll continue this way! Thanks for judging!

Wow, this song just sounds so right.

Even being nearly six minutes long, it never doubles back on itself. What makes that really amazing is that it still feels self-consistent. Some of the long-held notes feel absolutely perfect and I just love how small the song gets around 3:15.

The only thing that bugged me isn't even real criticism. Somewhere after 3:30 on the first listen my brain wanted a particular instrument to pitch bend upwards as it faded away. On the second listen I was writing the review and then when I got to writing this section I couldn't find the instrument that had bugged me anymore. And this was the only thing that bugged me.

Everything else sounded great. I think that this is your best song yet.

Birdinator99 responds:

Damn bro, that's high praise. I like this piece, and if you do too then I better make morrrrrrre

This felt like a return to the type of music I experimented with when I first started writing (most of which is so bad it's not worth posting here). It feels good to do that, and to see that it pleases people makes me excited.
