Grasping for the Wind

A light breeze develops into a mighty storm only to wisp away as gently as it came. Grasping for the transient wind is fruitless.

Once again, your music writing ability astonishes me. I've noticed you are particularly good at the piano, always something beautiful to be heard in your solo pieces. You are truly gifted, something very rare in the NG audio portal! Seriously, I would expect this being performed live or scoring a film.

BlazingDragon responds:

Piano is a huge part of my life. My actual playing skills are mediocre at best, but the feeling I get when I play is overwhelming. There have been times (rarely) when I've sat down to improvise at 2:00 AM and got so swept up that I started crying. It might sound strange, but the feeling is indescribable.

Anyway, thanks for the review! I was a little worried people wouldn't like it!

Cool piece!

I liked this a lot. You have a great flowing texture, and I also really liked how the delay on the piano flows into the played notes so that sometimes you can't tell which is which. On to the criticism:

1) The harmony at :30 sounded "wrong" me. I believe it is discordant rather than dissonant. You have a number of delicious sounding impressionistic chords throughout that sound very right to me so - if you want this passage to stand out that's fine, but just make sure your being honest with yourself that this is the sound that you want. If it is what you want, consider bringing it back at the end so that it is more memorable and sounds less like a mistake.

2) At 1:27 you suddenly lose a bit of the harmonic tension. It sounds unintentionally weak to me. You might consider smoothing over that spot with a more interesting harmony. (like what you just had a few seconds earlier). In impressionistic piano writing its important to make sure that the tension flows and ebbs in a convincing and smooth manor, in the words of my old harmony prof, "you want surprises, not shocks".

3) 1:44-46 sounds a little weak to me too, harmonically. It just feels like the oomph is falling away from your wonderful impressionistic flowing sound. Make sure this is actually what you want.

4) Loved :44-1:00, wish I had written that :D

Overall, I'm really happy to have discovered your music from the classical review thread.

BlazingDragon responds:

Actually, there is no delay in the piano. Ever single note is played (I have the sheet music to show it! lol)

1) When I first included that chord, it was a struggle deciding whether to keep it or not. After a few listens though, I came to the point of loving it. It might seem abrasive, but I like how it creates a moment of heightened tension before transitioning into the main theme of the piece. Your advice about putting it in at the end makes sense though, and I'll likely try it out. :)

2) Originally, I was trying to do a call and response phrase there, but now that I listen, you're right. The point of that section is to build up to the coming section, but the energy falls at that moment and compromises that purpose. Thank you for pointing that out and getting me to think! I'll see what I can do.

3) I see what you mean, and I'll think about it. My intent was to thin out the texture some and lower the dynamics as if the wind is dying down and passing by. I also wanted to use the poly-rhythm there. Still, you have a good point, and I'll see what changing it sounds like.

4) Thanks!!! :D

I appreciate the in depth review. It is rare that anyone on newgrounds gives intelligent input regarding harmony, and you've given me points to think about that did not previously occur to me. Thank you very much!

Not much to write a story, but here I go.......

A young boy is playing on the front porch of his house, which is out in the Great Plains. He's happily flocking as if his own home was his little utopia. Then, he decides to venture a bit away from his home, in search of some sort of adventure. He enters a dense forest and begins his skirmish.

As he keeps running, he feels as though he is traveling like the speed of wind. For a split-second, he thought he saw the air shift in front of him. But he kept running, faster and faster. Strangely, he wasn't losing his breath.

Now, the boy is sprinting so swiftly that the trees are literally swaying. It was as if the young boy was creating a small storm. This event occurs for hours until finally, a raging, yet non threatening tornado forms. The boy returns to his home, excited from his small trip in the forest. As he looks back, everything was as if the storm was never there. For a second, the boy thought he was actually "grasping the wind..." He enters his home, back into his normal life........

*Phew* Wow! Didn't that i'd do it! My friend, you inspire me to do these kinds of things. Keep it up!

BlazingDragon responds:

I love this story because in part because it is such a dramatic shift from what I and most others have envisioned! The general feelings has been one of meloncholy, and yet you have made a story which draws from wonder, curiosity, innocence, and exhilaration. That change of pace brings refreshment. :)

Your short story brings me a vivid stimulation of the senses. I can put myself in the shoes of the young boy and feel the air sifting through me hair as well as the adrenaline pumping through my vains. The excitement and wonder builds as seemingly impossible developments take place, but I enjoy the flow and run faster.

Thanks for the inspiring review, TrueWolf!

Quietly Recalling

Feelings of nostalgia trickle into my mind as I listen to this piece of organized melancholy. I am reminded of unrealized childhood dreams, swiftly shifting through everything I ever wanted to be and everything I ever wanted to do until, suddenly, I am back, sitting at my computer, remembering the time when I could be and do all of those things without leaving the playground.

Good work, Trevor, and don't forget to follow your own dreams.

BlazingDragon responds:

Too many people give up on their dreams. I recently read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, and it did a lot to change my mindset on the future. Highly recommended read.

I will most certainly pursue my dreams and urge you to do likewise. Thank you for the review my friend. :)

Beautiful

This is truly beautiful. Also, don't be afraid to follow your dream. I'm in the same place as you, trying to get to college with no money. Just keep working towards your goals, and you'll see that things will fall into place for you eventually. Also, don't fear that you won't do well. You have some of the most lovely music I've ever heard. So, good luck with everything.

BlazingDragon responds:

I talked with my choir teacher the other day and she told me the same thing. "Move out to Los Angeles and go for your dream! Things will fall into place for you." It seems risky, but I keep getting that same message everywhere I go. Even here from you. :) Thanks for helping make it that much more certain.

What is your dream, and what do you want to study? If you send a message, I'd love to know!
