Well, these have been a fun past couple of days! I learned how to record a little better, yay! Unfortunately, I still have to learn how to master the track! Boo... Oh well, I guess that just comes with experience. Regardless, I hope this is an enjoyable listen, because I did put some effort into this one. As always, criticism is welcome as long as it's not a MFB (Mindless Fucking Bash). Really, here's what I'm looking for:

1.) How can I get everything to sound more "present"? (Compare to Black Hole Earth Comsumption or something of that calibur; this song is getting there, but most certainly not of that quality JUST yet.)
2.) What techniques do you use to master so that I can get the same kind of awesome quality?

Okay, and now for the fun stuff. This song was made in about 4 or 5 days using FL Studio 9, Cubase, and a mixture of things I'm gonna keep on the DL because it's my "secret recipe" lol. I was running out of time for the NG Audio Deathmatch, and I actually had the drums all laid out for another song, but it completely lacked energy. I asked my dad why that was and he said that I wasn't using the music to "create an image" -- hence, the title, because I think this song will most definitely spawn an image when you listen to it.
The song was inspired by several different groups across many different time periods: Bullet for My Valentine, my homeboys Nothing More, Closure in Moscow, The Mars Volta, In Flames, Protest the Hero, Soilwork, Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater, and August Burns Red, to name a few.
And I really owe a lot to few good people that I know. First, I owe my dad because he helped lay down the bassline, and he helped my guitar playing and inspiration in ways that I never thought possible. Second, I owe my brother for spicing up the drumwork and working with me (and for those of y'all who don't know, he goes under the alias R0tt3n-Appl3 here on NG, and when him and I work together as a team, our sound is pretty good; for example, Halo: Lone Rider was a collab between him and I, and its success is due to our persistence). And last but not least, I owe Xenogenocide for not only inspiring me with his music and sound, but also for providing invaluable advice for not only this track, but also for the ones to come.

And with that, I hope you enjoy! Good luck to my competition in the Deathmatch; it's been a fun couple of weeks! =)

P.S. And btw, I will be releasing a better version of this in the weeks (or days) to follow; I'm quite disappointed in the mastering, and there's certain things I'd like to change as well...possibly the acoustic ending a little. If you want a better sound out of me, though, I need some feedback! ;)

Fukken boss.

Please master this song. This is iPod-worthy.

Damn!

Personally, I'm loving this version! Old or not, it's giving me the feel of good classic metal/rock. Damn good. If you ever make more, be sure you'll have at least one fan who'll love it.

Wow. Just got to the acoustic end...sounds to me like another song entirely. It's good standing alone. Keep it and make another song using it maybe? Anywho, still great!

mr-jazzman responds:

Thanks man, glad you like this version as well! It does have a classic rock feel to it, doesn't it? The thing I'm gonna try to do in future songs is bring out them drums. I think I've finally figured out a few new mastering & EQing techniques, but we'll see. I'm glad you at least enjoyed this one man! =)

What can I say...

...I love me some metal! This is great man! I am really enjoying this.

I like the riffs and the flow of the song a lot. It really melds together quite well. You have a solid mix going here with the guitars and drums for sure, which is crucial. I think you could bring out the bass in the mix a bit, cause I'm not hearing much bass at all. I think I hear it hiding in there, but I could be mistaken. :-P

Now my one major dislike was the flanger on the one guitar. I don't know why, but I personally didn't dig that in this song. That is personal opinion though, I'm sure you can take it or leave it for what it is worth easily enough. Despite that I loved this little tune quite a bit.

5/5 and 9/10 overall.

mr-jazzman responds:

Thanks for the feedback broski, I always love me some feedback! =) Yeah, there was a point where I thought the flanger was a bit much. Honestly, I was working with a new piece of equipment, so I didn't know how to take it off, but I don't think it really detracts from the song all that much. However, I respect your opinion; you can't please everybody with EVERYthing after all!

As for the bass, I'm gonna look into that. I think the main reason that I didn't turn up the bass more is cuz, while producing this song, there were points where the bass was EXCESSIVELY loud, and it really pissed me off cuz the bass is not typically a lead instrument, like, EVER. So, I had to do some research and find the bass's niche in the mix. It took a while, but I think I may have POSSIBLY found it. Now, the problem is that it's TOO quiet, so I'm gonna have to check that out. I think a lot of it has to do with the way the bass was played as well. Maybe if I brought it up a little in the mix, and then made it harmonize better with the guitar? Not entirely sure yet, but I'm gonna have to do some experimenting. Also, boiling the strings might help; the strings on the bass are so dead atm lol =P

Thanks again for your review, much appreciated! And gl in the NGADM man! =)

Hmm...

You know what i find weird? I didn't quite mind this song, yet i HATE this genre. Sounds a bit like the bg music of Dynasty Warriors 6 when i think about it too xD Some bits anyway :)

I can't quite help with the mastering problem/dilemma, but good luck with it, and hope it all works out :D
