The Brink (Parts 1 & 2)

The full title is "The Brink of War" and it's shaping up to be a little under 10 minutes long.
There are seven parts:
1. "where we were" - disco grunge, if that even exists yet - just to get the whole thing started right, with the rock
2. "horrific chapters about to be written" - ambient finger picking part, like the lullaby before the kiss of death - this is the cleansing breath after that disco silliness - I couldn't start it all off with this cuz we'd both get bored or fall asleep
3. "main thing, part 1" - verse 1, chorus 1
4. "nothing special" - bridge 1 - a sick kinda lullaby, with drums
5. "buildup of forces" - bridge 2 - three-part riff in 3 different ways, all building up to the reintro
6. "main thing, part 2" - verse 2, chorus 2 - this is that repetitiveness we were discussing earlier
7. "finale" - the big rock with the ambient ending - 'setting sail' to the theater, then waiting on a windy deck at midnight for the order to strike - the closing thought, or moral of the story (if there could be one), and a warning to all those who would play god
I've been my own harshest critic of this song more than others, having recorded it six different times, much to the same result - frustration and disappointment. The first version is acoustic, in the normal key. It just wasn't metal enough.
Far be it from me to refuse to accept a half-rate recording, but its really been a whole process of just living with what gets captured each time. The arrangements and timings were all wrong, or I screwed up big time. Either way...
The first part was the last thing I wrote.
There's a second verse written, but segueing it in and out again tacks on another two and a half minutes. I'll play that version when I become more popular. You'll be all like, "Oohh, he's playing that super-ultra-secret second verse... omg!" Not.
I played the full version at an open mic one time and they didn't allow me a second song. The crowd booed. It was awesome.
I think I'm ripping off some song in the ambient 2nd part, but I have no idea who. I play this part and people start humming along, telling me it sounds so familiar... I have no idea. Let me know. As this is a work in progress, give me good criticism. Are the guitars too loud? Not loud enough? I know the dirtorted lead at the very end of the first part is just a few hairs too loud, and I intend to correct that. Yeah, I'm being OCD about this song... it's ten fucking minutes long!
I don't think the guitar is at all in the proper tune, ever. I don't care, and that's what makes this grunge.

...

i am litteraly checking this site everyday to see when that next part comes out, that must have been one hell of an open mic night. I cannot wait untill the other parts! hurry up and make them!!!

...

its, diferent. never heard anything like it, and i love, but i gotta a question, i read somewhere that u sing and do guitar, do you do drums, or do you do it on a program like garage band? just sorta curious

Gunshy responds:

i think i emailed you this, but yeah i do everything.
guitar is real
my voice is real, not vocoded or autotuned or any of that crap
drums are real drums sampled thru fruityloops

A good intro

But when the distortion starts to kick in during part one, it doesn't sound as distinct as it should, I'd have to hear the rest of this epic, but I also kind of think part 1 and 2 should be switched around, with 2 building up to 1.

Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

Gunshy responds:

thanks for another review! awesome.
i feel you with the switching parts 1 & 2 but i swear everyone would fall asleep if it started with part 2! i swear! i once fell asleep playing it! :)
anyway, yeah the rest of the song... eh.
i have just finished principal recording of a whole new version of this in a slightly higher key.
this is in C# and the new version is in D (not drop), and the recording is way crisper and heavier than the kind of warbly jazz distortion that this version has.
good ear, to you!

great

i cant wait for the full version! This is awesome. Gunshy is on my new mix list right after Led Zeppelin and before Pink Floyd! Awesome stuff
