Reviews for "The Wizard's Grimoire"

One of my favourites of yours. This is great!

ChronoNomad responds:

You are far too kind, my friend. I am honored that you like it so much.

Nice touch with panning!
Hooked on that main motif.
Love your sense of 'brief' storytelling as much as I liked it in One Hero's Journey, although I'm curious and wonder how it would sound if it was longer and every part had more time to develop (since there are a lot of individual parts).
Great job once more Chrono!

ChronoNomad responds:

Haha, awesome! Two positive comments on the panning in a row. Thank you very much, endKashika. I respect the heck out of all my fellow artists, but I generally deem you to be right at the top of the heap when it comes to all things Chiptune, so your feedback means a lot to me.

My time for working on this piece was a bit more limited this year, but I still wanted to make the most of it and do something along a similar vein to One Hero's Journey. Fortunately, I was able to finish the track with a few days' grace, especially since I ended up coming down with the cold that's been making the rounds. Suffice to say, it's much harder to work on music when your ears are all stopped up and your head feels like it's locked in a vice.

Perhaps one day I'll take some of these smaller sections and flesh them out a bit more. For now, it's been really fun trying to tell a story over the course of a handful of minutes. What's really crazy is that this track has more individual sections that last year's...even though it's almost a minute shorter!

Thanks again for the review, endKashika! It's really cool to know that you're listening.

I adore that panning fast synth!
This piece is such a nice listen.
Good luck in pixelday, and congrats on the frontpage!

ChronoNomad responds:

Hey, Lucid! Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving a nice review. I was wondering if anyone would mention the panning synth that I used for the accompanying arpeggios. Very happy to hear that you like it so much! I'm glad that you enjoy the track and love seeing a review from you, my friend. Viva la Pixel Day!

Good song. I read the description while I was listening, and you can really hear what each part is about once you know it. I like how the song tells a story, If you don't read the description the song may tell a different story. Which is also nice. The sound allows for different interpretations. Maybe it's just me, but when I hear chiptune, I always start to wonder what instruments would be used if it weren't chiptune. This song can go multiple directions in that regard. It could be symphonic. Could be pop. Could be instrumental or it could be sung. The sound it has right now is also very pleasant by itself, so it's not like it would become better with different instruments, but that's just me wondering. I actually just like how you can have a lot of different stories with the same song.

ChronoNomad responds:

Many thanks, SourJovis! Interestingly enough, although I've listed out my own ideas for the song, I had rather hoped that some would simply let their own imaginations run wild to tell a unique and varied story. That's part of the fun, after all! Music is wonderfully subjective that way.

The past couple of years especially, my Pixel Day goal has been to create a track that embraces a number of genres...besides the obvious Chiptune, of course. Classic Fantasy RPG themes, but with a twist. Your review has made me feel like this has been a success, and ultimately makes the whole endeavor worthwhile.

So many tales could be told through such a soundtrack. So many songs could be sung. The imagination truly is a miraculous thing, and I thank you very much for listening.

There are many lovely melodies in here, and the orchestration is mostly good. I think the secondary melodic lines (I don't really know what to call it) sound divergent and distracting at times, but there are some instances of nice countermelodies. I like the layered leads. I wish the drum beats were faster, but the song sounds pretty relaxing and enjoyable nonetheless.

ChronoNomad responds:

Thank you for taking the time to review, Everratic! Your feedback is appreciated. Interestingly enough, the track itself runs at a fairly steady 150bpm until the ritardando (decrease in speed) at the end.

The rhythm of the drum beats is pretty much by design, and I'm personally really happy with the percussion, but music is nothing if not subjective. Regardless, I'm glad that you still enjoyed my little musical tale! ^__^
