Reviews for "Don't Save the Princess 0.3.1"

fun but i didn't realize you had to select the ability's you want to equip lol

That smut was a really good reward for clearing an arc. Love seeing Plum get what she wanted

Very fun mechanics! I never play a game like this before! the porn aspect is just a bonus but the gameplay is real! good job!!

It'd probably benefit from not being a porn game. The porn didn't add much but the mechanics have potential.
I'd say make the current traps active effects, but add passive traps that can carry on combos or force Runman into a bad position for an active.

And add actives for diagonals, too. That could be fun for later levels.

But if you do wanna do that, the art style probably needs a total overhaul. Make it more your own thing instead of a parody.

Wow, this game is a really fun! A creative take on the endless runner genre, executed exceedingly well.

Gameplay-wise, I think there's a great deal of things done very well, from the challenges (timing those smasher drops man) to the satisfaction when you succeed (finally hitting that smasher on Runman's head when he's mid-jump over a hole and he STILL falls down it, feels better than the sex scenes honestly). A lot of this is down to how well it runs and how responsive it is, a testament to your coding skills.
Something I'd like to see improved however is that I noticed there's a lot of clickyness, in particular in the shop, and being forced to press enter when you want to start a level is a little clunky. A few suggestions to improve these might be making the shop tell you what each upgrade will do (oh add some numbers! I love numbers) when you hover over their icon and then clicking on it would purchase the upgrade; allowing players to select upgrades from the shop as well; putting a shop button on the level select screen so you don't have to go back to the main menu to buy stuff; and changing the 'start the level' button to spacebar since you're already prepared to press that one when you're in the "I'm going to play the level now" mindset.

Art-wise, I'm in love with the style. The giant angular eyes (or "decaf Yugi-Oh!" as I like to call it) aren't really my thing, but the minions are adorable, the Shoelanders and Runman look appropriately dopey and Dragogai is a decent enough generic villain looking character. In particular, I love the flying magnet minion, it really adds to the satisfaction of stealing away the coins a split-second before Runman can grab them to see a little minion with wings and a giant magnet appear before him.
I think I'd like to see a little bit more animation in the cutscenes though. The graphics look great during the sex scenes, but giving them some motion will go miles in making it look even sexier and immersive.
As for the rest of the game, it could be fun to experiment with a little bit of animation, perhaps a little splash of Princess Plum firing the Lightning Cannon like another user mentioned; but it isn't necessary and adding too much movement on the screen, especially during runs when you need to focus to time your keys right, may end up being distracting or even complicating timings if there's too much buildup in the animations.

On the writing aspect I can't comment very much as I'm not super familiar with writing techniques and such, but I did really enjoy the way the characters were fleshed out to have their own personalities and desires (you know, outside the obvious when you're playing a sex game).
It's always fun to play with people's expectations, but you clearly put effort into carrying those changes through every level; the "bad guy" doesn't just turn out to be a good guy in a very shallow way, by simply being friendly and well-spoken, but you went out of your way to show he cares about the well-being of his people and tries to improve their lives in multiple meaningful ways.
In a similar fashion, the character of Princess Plum is shown to be dimensional: she has an occupation of managing a kingdom; needs like being able to relax every so often and honestly getting a good fuck from time to time; she's assertive and takes what she wants without being a stereotypical femdom; gets annoyed by things; and it's clear she even has interests like organising stuff and politics, even when she's at Dragogai's place and all is peaceful, showing that she doesn't just do what she does because she wants to get boned.

When it comes to sound, I'm loving the classic sound effects, they really add to the comedy while being useful still. I especially like how the dropper minion and the spiky ball minion have different grunts when they show up, allowing you to recognise what's on the board much more intuitively than if the distinction was only visual.
Similarly, maybe it'd be nice to have a clear distinction in sounds when you score a crit, adding to the satisfaction by letting you know you did a good job, even if your eyes happen to be elsewhere when the attack lands. After all, you don't need your eyes to press buttons!
The music works well enough, the track you've got isn't too obnoxious that it gets annoying when it just plays on loop the whole game long, and the simplistic style of it gels well with the classic arcadey/Newgrounds feel of the game in general. I'd like to see a couple more tracks, though, to help differentiate between menu and gameplay environments, as well as the concurrent emotions during cutscenes.

Game's already great as-is, and with a little bit more polish, I could easily see this be a 9.5/10!

SierraLee responds:

Thanks for the detailed feedback! We're always trying to polish the details to get the feeling right, so I will definitely take some of the minor suggestions into account.

Some things aren't on the table, unfortunately. I'm afraid that (sex scene) animations are among those: I've enjoyed this experiment and intend to finish it, but the project is already over-budget. I'm not ruling out little animations to add life to some of the other elements, though.

Of course, I'm glad that you enjoyed so many elements of the game. ^-^ It's especially nice to get feedback on the sound effects, since that's rare. A different tone for crits is a good idea. Please follow the game on Steam if you're interested in the eventual release!
