Reviews for "Magna Caves"

Really good, but what other people have said is true. If arrow keys aren’t locked down and scroll the webpage, while wasd work just fine, better to disable the arrow keys completely. The stars to progress thing works, but there should be some give to it; needing 12 or 13 stars out of a possible 15 to progress means people are less likely to get frustrated on levels they can barely solve needing to be solved in the most perfect way. In some cases, they are not going to see some of the best parts of the game as a result because the level groups unlock in a linier order. Again, really clever, but just missing the mark.

The movement system works because it is grid based, and the graphics are good. The step counter is helpful and the camera controls are nice to have, though I never really used them. Some music may liven it up as well.

All in all, it shows great promice!

Thanks for the feedback!!

i can't move the character up or down without the entire game scrolling. Help?

bananabeng responds:

Press "C" to toggle between camera & movement mode! You can press "Esc" to check the controls at any time

It lagged like a female dog on certain levels when I tried playing on Chrome (literally less than 1 FPS) even after rebooting my computer and just having one browser window open to run it, and is a little choppy but playable on Firefox. It's not clear what's causing the lag from the DevTools Performance analytics, so sorry that's not much help.

Once you get past the performance issues, there are some pretty clever puzzles in here. I'm not as put off by the star system as the other reviewers, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have all or most of the levels unlocked from the outset and have something like a mediumly-good ending for finishing all levels and a better ending for getting all stars if you feel like making them happy.

bananabeng responds:

Thanks for the feedback on the performance issues. We had ported the game from a LibGDX / Java stack and the HTML5 export might not be as performant as we'll like. You guys can download the original game release at https://bananabeng.itch.io/magna-caves that runs on Java more smoothly, hopefully!

I assume that "which one 3" and "which one 5" are broken, I had tried all routes but none of them are correct.

Lots of this is well-made, most of the graphics looks nice and the puzzles are well-designed, but the controls feel jerky rather than smooth/tight, and the system of using stars to progress is horrible - a real grind to play through.

bananabeng responds:

Agree that we could do something better than the stars system - we'll think about how we could make progression & mastery more satisfying
