Reviews for "[BTNverse] Universal Thief"

A fun game that, for once, is unique compared to a lot of RPG games these past few years. Visuals are nice, and the humor and actions are amusing. The gameplay, on the other hand, is sometimes repetitive, and at worst, is downright irritating. Only 2 major problems, with the last one being an opinion:

An ability can sometimes be too overpowered, where I could breeze through multiple levels without ever replacing it. An example is [AUDIT], where it halves HP if the enemy's HP is even. Other times, abilities can be right up worthless. And some are annoying to counter if you're not more powerful than the enemy. An example: fighting the normal president at the [Political World]'s last stage, where he has 10k HP and can also heal...10k, at no cost but a turn. It would've been fine if he didn't spam it repeatedly, 5 times in a row, attack only once, and do it again.

The fight with the sun though...it's obnoxious. Along with a ridiculous HP count, the AI constantly spams [TERRAFORM]. To save your time, it's basically the same with the president, but 10x worse because you restart the whole stage (moon killing simulator).

There's also randomized terrain. It's neat and is a minimal change to the gameplay, but sometimes it goes against the player completely. In the same stage as the last issue, on my 3rd attempt, I finally finished the stage's enemies in a few seconds by luck, only to find the [Space Rocket] completely blocked off. Frustrating.

This doesn't actually affect gameplay much, but stealing their ID only serves as a new way of transportation and speed. I wish it did more, as I made a lot of mistakes when beginning when I could've gone with HP instead.

Edit: Amazing. I would love to see this as a full game, honestly.

Thanks for the thoughtful review!

About abilities being overpowered, that's intended. The goal of the game is to figure out the most broken combos to win, I really see this more like a puzzle than an RPG. Each area has its own multiple of HP which corresponds to its area-specific broken ability.

Also I am not sure about that randomized terrain you speak of, this sounds more like a bug (for the record you can press R to restart the level) the terrain is supposed to have random aesthetics but is actually supposed to be fixed in terms of collision, I might have to look into that, thanks for notifying me.

in an ideal version of this game, stealing ID would have various unique effects depending on the character, but I just didn't have time to code this in (it was after all a 48 hours project)

Game looks great but it crashed when I was battling with the stop sign and made me have to restart everything. Check points would be nice.

adriendittrick responds:

it has a checkpoint at the beginning if each level in the form of the save system!

how do u pass the huge lake 2 levels after beating mayor

adriendittrick responds:

you gotta steal a plane!
If you mess up and kill it you can reset with R.
Loading your save also works.

I had my mass destroy countless moons.

i can't beat the mayor so if you update this i would recommend nerfing the mayor as when i fought him he just would not stop using back up and i fought him for a hour i would recommend having back up be like the ram move as in theres a chance of it working or theres a chance it fails

adriendittrick responds:

if you're stuck with eco-tax, I recommend fighting a cop to get the "boost" move and the"thrash" move. Use boost 4 times in a row (to multiply damage by 16), then use thrash to oneshot the mayor.
