Reviews for "GENTLES"

God, this is so fucking funny.

Never in a million years did I think I'd leave a review about a dog who wants to watch porn and accidentally discovers that he's a rapper. I also didn't expect to love it so much.

So here's the thing: at face value, the concept shouldn't work. It shouldn't. At least it shouldn't work so well. However, in the execution, you guys knocked it out of the ballpark in pretty much every way.

The best place to start would have to be the dialogue. Many humorous animations struggle to be funny because there is a lack of clever quips between the characters. This 3-minute cartoon used the dialogue very well and had those clever quips (my favorite is when Gentles says "cultural appropriation" to calling it doggy style). I don't know why, but I also like how Jimmy Fallon is in the end credits after seemingly being unimportant in the beginning. It was very clever and highly effective.

But good dialogue can fall with bad voice acting. Thank god this is not the case. The voice actors did a fantastic job, their inflections were dynamic and were easy to listen to. Jaq did a great job with making each line exaggerated and Jon's dry responses acted as a great foil to that. Not much else to say on this, but that doesn't mean it was any less because of that.

As someone who makes music myself (as a hobbyist), I was especially impressed with the sound design and soundtrack. The background music was interesting to listen to and helped add "umph" to the jokes being told. And of course, how could I not address the elephant in the room: that absolute fire rap Gentles spits out. It caught me off guard in a great way. The animation "won me over" once I saw that rap (lol). The music during the credits also made it feel more final in a very disarming (but good) way. Props to Chris for bringing his all in the OST.

The animation was great too. Dare I say it reminded me of that "classic newgrounds"-esque style. So, points for unintentional nostalgia... I guess? Jaq and Jon worked very quickly for the jam, but that definitely didn't affect the quality. The look of the backgrounds are simplistic yet effective (especially with that almost hand-drawn-to-paper look to it), and the character animation is on point. No character feels too static, they all look great! The color pallet was chosen very carefully too. Excellent Job to Jon and Jaq.

If someone had simply told me the plot before I had seen it I wouldn't have liked it. I never would have thought I'd write such a glowing review.

But....

The execution of everything leaves me absolutely baffled in the best ways possible. Wonderful job to you guys and good luck on the jam. I can't wait to see more from all of you in the future.

Dude... loved everything about this, especially the voiceacting! I kinda want a follow up...
a part 2...

This is the best one

I need a full version of that rap
