Reviews for "Dead Horizon"

Should have been called: A girl with stripper name vs Robot Garra.

Serious review:

The best part that made the game was obviously the story. It was masterfully told with words that left the impression of a real old western slang. Reading the lore book made the western feeling even stronger and I think people who didn't read it before playing missed a good experience.

One thing that lessened the cool impact of the story was the realization that the main character is a woman. Once that was clear it all started to look much more anime/hentai style cartoony and less Fallout/Western/Steampunk serious. It would have been better if the protagonist were a man. Surely women can shoot as good as men (with modern non-heating, soft recoil guns), but a story about a woman as a lone wolf who doesn't crack from ostracism, has no admirers despite fame/infamy and drinks like a man while still being able to shoot is a bit too much suspension of disbelief.

A good part of the game is the various bounty hunters that come after you their names and personalities and variety is commendable - for characters that die in a few seconds from a single mouse click. A samurai was a good inclusion and reminded me of some old western movies and of the Akira Kurosawa Easterns as predecessors to Western genre in general. The last villain was terrifying indeed, both looks and the text did a good job into making me feel respect for him.

The worst thing abut the game is it's short length. The Lore book actually took longer time to read then playing the game, so it felt at least. On the other hand such is the nature of the gunslinger fight- the outcome is fast, so in this case the brevity of the game can be pardoned, considering the story lines does a lot to drag the lighting fast battles out.

The last disappointing thing would be would be the ending. Almost no difference between surviving ad dying. Death should end with black screen but surviving should end with a story about traveling away or rehabilitation of the hero(ine) after defeating the sand monster who destroyed the village.

So while the game was good it shows a lot of areas of improvement. I think it would be better if the game would fallow the story of the guy from lore book. There would be many benefits for that: 1.He was a man. 2.He killed twenty something guys so the game could feature 20 shootouts instead of just 5 and be longer. 3.The story about his father would look great if told graphically. 4.You could include some fistfights, using the same game mechanic but non lethal for storytelling purposes, including a fistfight where the father defeats the rebellious boy. 5. The story could feature a whole life of protagonist from 12 to 50 years of age and dying naturally would be the ultimate achievement. 6. Perhaps some situations where shooting people down or shooting them in limbs/gun/gunhand and just disarming them would mean difference between killing them and a harder to pull off mercy kill could mean difference between their family wishing vengeance or being grateful to you. (like in movie - Invitation to gunfighter) and would mean different endings even from natural death - dying all alone or dying surrounded by a loving family. Then you could make medals for NG players for each different ending.

Perhaps you could make a sequel/prequel like that? That would be great.

I give you a little lower rating then most people, but that is just because I cannot help but see a lot of unrealized potential in this game even trough it is good as it is. I hope you continue to make games and make a longer and even better game next time!

Emptygoddess responds:

Bonnie Starr is actually named after Belle Starr. A famous old west outlaw.

Nice short.

Duel scenes seems closely related to the duels the gunman named Papaco won - Papaco is one of the great, if not the greatest, gunman in the history of South America.

Emptygoddess responds:

I actually don't know them. However, I will look into this now!

Emptygoddess responds:

That is weird.

Emptygoddess responds:
