Reviews for "Dark Matter Suite (w/ hyquo)"

Wow this song is long but then again, I published Bianka which is 9 minutes...
0:00-0:08 ?/10: Don't know what to say
0:09-0:42 10/10: Very peaceful. I loved how you used those drums.
0:43-0:47: LOL Glitch.
0:48-1:09: 8/10: I like the buildup but the DM cry in the background sorta ruined the buildup.
1:09-1:31 9/10 Nice drop but the tone changed.
1:32-1:42 10/10: Sounds like it would be in a running game.
1:43-2:05 9/10: Same notes as the first drop but loving the tempo slowdown.
2:06-2:23 7/10: Uh-oh! Sounds like the song just broke!
2:24-2:41 10/10: The song is really mysterious...
2:42-3:02 9/10: Sound like it's raining but I like the tone of this plus the lightning noise at the end.
3:03-3:43 9/10: Would be beautiful if the rain had stopped...
3:44-3:29 10/10: Good drop(?)
3:30-4:04 10/10: This is my favorite part of the song because of the drums and whatever that thing in the foreground is called.
4:05-4:22 10/10: Nice melody(?)
4:23-4:24 9/10: Im not sure but I kinda think the guitar is unessary...
4:25-4:37 10/10: Woah, very fast paced and it makes me feel like I'm climbing a mountain very fast.
4:38-4:44 10/10: Woah, sudden tone change plus the tone is kinda nice.
4:45-4:52 10/10: I like thia part because it is happy and fast.
4:53-5:04 10/10: This part is still happy but getting pretty sad pretty slow.
5:05-5:16 10/10: Oh...wow the song is sad again...
5:17-5:30 9/10: I think this part is for a underwater theme
5:31-6:21 10/10: I think the sad part just wraps up tbe song. Great ending though.

Overall score: 9/10. Good work! Including the person you collabed with. :D

Onefin responds:

WOAH WHERE DID YOU COME FROM

0:43 LOL
0:48 But you gotta have the DM
1:09 Eh we tried
2:06 Welcome to the world of glitchcore (which is a genre name I just made up)
3:03 You know, someone else said the same thing. Also it's fire, but I guess that didn't come acros well. Eh :/
4:23 Unnecessary? Come on, man, gotta get yo JAM ON (it was LOrb's idea, I liked it)

Hey thanks for dropping by, I appreciate it! Really! :D

Untill 1:08 I've got nothing to say actually. This song has a subtle but fitting beginning and build up.
The DnB chorus however is quite messy there happens a lot, and it sort of blurs together, making it unclear what exacly happens. This may be a mixing issue, but I'm cautious with touching that subject, because I know you can mix very well. Let's say I think the snare has too little power compared to the kick, and the bass is muddy. At the same time it gives me a certain feeling of tension. Putting it into the perspective of a battle, it does a good job. I don't know if that's intentional.

From 2:07 you get the atmosphere. Amazing, seriously. It touched me.

Around 3:20 there is this build up that I can't quite place. It's abrupt, but it suits the song somehow. The following part can do with some more highs I reckon. It's a bit muffled in my opinion.
The transition around is 4:40 is also abrupt. That probably is intentional too.

Overall I think this song is a creative masterpiece. The production level is high, and the composition is rather complex. Tempo changes, changes in style, different time signatures, the whole lot. I'm seriously blown away by this. Also it was quite hard to review. I hope this helped, and I hope that I didn't say anything stupid.

5 skips in the R4R is too much, I reckon ;)

Onefin responds:

A million thanks for the review! I was almost ready to give up XD

I noticed those mixing issues in the DnB section, but there wasn't much I could figure out to make it better. Part of the problem was the sidechaining - we decided on sidechaining everything to the kick instead of to the beat in order to make the kick drum actually audible, but that resulted in some excessive ducking in some parts. Also, the bass consisted of sixteenth notes with a boobass, an e-guitar, and a sound LOrb decided to title "crisp noise bass". Wasn't sure how to clean that up, as deleting one of the three sounds makes the bass lose its intensity. It was tough - we did our best, but there's definitely still mud.

Your battle perspective was most certainly intentional! Quote from the description: "The fight with Dark Matter gets under way!"

Augmented chords and sound effects are fantastic together

I can understand if transitions in the last half were weird. We had to figure out how to get the piece to constantly switch between very distinct styles very rapidly and seamlessly. The buildup at 3:20 is where I had to go from dark ambiance to melodic house, and the 4:40 part goes from a DnB rock thing to a piano break. We had another one of those at 5:04, as well. Neither of us are too great at transitions - we certainly tried our best, but there's definitely room to improve. :)

Hey, with so many style changes, maybe I should list them in the description in the "STATS" column.

Once again, thanks a bunch for the review! Feedback is always appreciated! I'll pass on these words to LOrbSheddy, as well. :)

Very relaxing good work!

Onefin responds:

I hope this review isn't for R4R.

If you have no idea what that means, then thanks, because you've done nothing wrong! If it is, consider letting someone else come and review, because this is not a review.

This is great. I hate to leave crits ever but I feel this basically just needs a mixing clean-up. Thanks for reading.

Onefin responds:

Eh, I tried my best XD mixing is not my strong suit. Does anything in particular stand out to you as needing said clean up?

Really sounds Pokemony, more than any of your other stuff. With more pokemon-esque drums I could legit see this being its own standalone piece in a new pokemon game. Idk I really like it, and the drop from really happy and peaceful to all of a sudden chaos was pretty awesome.

Onefin responds:

A large portion of the Pokemon-y sounds and drums were made by LOrb, so yeah XD

This probably couldn't be a standalone piece in a core game, because it's far too original XD it would stand out being placed in the middle of a bunch of generic crap.

This song takes a lot of turns, some of them pretty sudden XD Glad you like it, Etzer!
