You probably made the situation worse for her though. She probably got beat later at home for "embarrassing him" earlier due to your intervention. Just know that.

Unless you can get someone completely out of an abusive relationship and permanently away from the abuser, they'll just retaliate later. And most people who are in abusive relationships don't want out, don't see their abuser as abusive (instead blaming themselves), and/or will immediately go right back to another abusive relationship right after.

You can only help someone who wants to help themselves.

I disagree with everything you said except the people wanting to help themselves part. At least that guy knows that he can't get away with smacking her on a public street. I could help stop that. The rest is on her. On my part, when growing up my dad hit my mom and I wished that more people weren't afraid to do something or say something about it. Even our family wouldn't help. He was a big guy, into drugs and a psycho so she did the right thing and kicked him out so we wouldn't have to grow up in an abusive household. I can tell you a lot about what we went through but it would take hours.
